honestly with how bulky and heavy it is it's pushing the limits of portability. gone are the days of pocket transport! or maybe I should just get oversized pockets lol
It is more portable than a ps4/5 as some people will say that.
But steamdeck is right now the most "portable" modern device with the best price / performance value. it cant be carried like a ds in your pocket thats for sure but with a nice package it is pretty good to handle.
true true I love mine but I'm always scared to bring it anywhere because I feel like I'm gonna end up dropping it
I highly recommend dbrands KillSwitch case! It is expensive, but once you put that thing on the Deck, it literally feels so much better (and safer!) in my hands! The grip is the best I’ve ever seen!
Nope it is the ROG Ally : better design and form factor, better autonomy (OLED is fine but need more power), cheaper, better desktop solution (you can print), Xbox pass.
As usual dishonest people will down vote.
Windows on handheld is battery drain and UI/UX is the worst on there, worse design(i just say "destroying Microsd" and then not even repair that flaw and scam their customers from their repairs ), clump of plastic with no ergonomic, propiatary connector for external gpu ( steamdeck doesnt need that as its good enough for 99% ) cheaper? ????????? Desktop solution and their "ROG Ally software" is crappy 10$ development. Linux > Windows on handheld for battery and performance. You only get windows for xbox game pass. ( There are alternatives on linux too i think ).
The prices are almost equal, steamdeck you can easier upgrade and have better support and community ( see you ), the oled on steamdeck is peak and controlls are the best there.
Steamdeck is a bit more portable as it isnt as THICK as the ROG Ally. + Valve doesnt iterate every year over their handheld but updates their os.
Every serious battery life test will teach you that the ROG is the winner. I bough a brand new ROG for 350 bucks. Good luck to get a better price for a steamdeck. For the weight my ROG : 608g / Steamdeck : 669g.
I doubt the battery live as its on windows and has more beefed up specs to supporg windows. Ok i had one in my hands i guess ergonomics are completly different when it felt heavier.
350 bucks i get a steamdeck too i guess if it eats my sd cards its an ok price to pay
I can use my phone or tablet as a portable screen for my Xbox
Can even use it as a portable screen for my PC
Why would I want a steam deck vs having a bigger tablet screen and a controller I don't have to stare at?
Portability, but the steamdeck is as portable as my tablet if it can't fit it into a pocket.
Have you tried it? It's quite nice. It plays all my favorite retro games via emulation and most modern games I care about. I can dock it and use a controller and bigger screen. Oh, it also functions as a pretty solid desktop solution if I want.
Solide desktop solution without any printer drivers. Stop to feed steam, there are better solutions for retro gaming.
But still this scraps on that topic is a bulky ps4/5/xbox PORTABLE for you? Steamddck can stream onto bigger displays too or evem remote play things that are to high gpu intensive onto your main pc.
A tablet cant play games ( except mobile games ) on its own.
It has a nice case for transport and the controlls are the best on the market ( even upgradable / easy to repair ) i would love a "just the controller" part of the steamdeck.
And if you need a tablet + controller + the console itself. THIS is NOT portable in any way or form as you just need a literal backpack full of periphials including power cord to power it 24/7.
I don't need to bring my Xbox around. Simply open the xbox app and my Xbox screen is now on my tablet anywhere I'm at.
My tablet can stream onto bigger displays or even stream my PC.
You don't need to carry around the console
Ahh its cloud gaming then, like steam link. It works the same.
Steam link is not cloud gaming. Steam link serves the game from your own PC, not a server in the cloud.
Yes i know but that is what i mean with steam link you stream your game to another pc / screen. Microsoft xbox is cloud gaming and is laggier
The Xbox processes the game.
Tablet just streams screen and sends inputs from/to Xbox.
So you don't really need an extreme tablet/phone/laptop
Im bringing my tablet/phone anywhere I'm going, so having a steamdeck would just be an extra thing to carry and worry about charging.
You can do on-screen controls that aren't bad for some games. Otherwise, Xbox controller.
The controller in the steamdeck has to kill its battery life some. 2 extra AA batteries, and I could use my Xbox controller for weeks.
I'd rather have 4x the screen size and not have to hold it the entire time while being semi-mobile. I'm not going to walk around and play on a steamdeck, maybe some do and then that's a plus on the steamdeck.
Steam deck is nice and I can see why people enjoy it. My thing is why more people don't like tablet/phone/laptop gaming and talk about the steamdeck like it's a game changer.
My tablet is basically my PC at home. I can access and do everything remotely, including gaming.
So its just a steam link app? You are fully mobile instead to carry 1 tablet 1 controller 1 phone with you.
Same with steamdeck you can literally remotedesktop or just use steamlink to access your pc.
People dont like to carry a laptop around and the same argument i said why not just get a steamdeck as it just literally combines your laptop, tablet and controller + can be used as literall laptop ( even better with docking station ) because your argument is that bingjng 3 items is easier to carry 1 (with carry case) to play mobile.
Your argument that you dont want to carry the entire setup is understandable ( i dont have problems gaming on it for hours without interruptions and i am not the strongest ).
The steamdeck is a game changer in the terms of linux gaming and portability of consoles ( i would say your setup isnt portable as 3 items to bring 24/7 is like why not take your xbox ) and the controllers are just best and inovative + repairability, its for a long time a repairable console from a big company.
It's probably similar. You could just use your phone and controller. My phone screen 6.8 inches, not the best ratio, but the steamdeck is only 7.4 inches.
Like I've been saying, they are basically the same.
Yeah, a laptop can get left out of the equation. Tablet or phone are better.
I don't need a docking station to hook my tablet to TV. I can even stream my tablet screen wirelessly to TV.
Carrying around the docking station goes against it being portable.
Theoretically, all I need is my tablet or phone. 1 item. The controller helps with some games.
You keep saying 3 items...and because my xbox weighs 10+ pounds.
My tablet weighs 1.6 pounds. Steamdeck is 1.48 pounds. Xbox controller weighs .63 pounds.
You're talking about half a pound difference in weight. Tablet takes little to no space and the controller probably half of the steamdeck.
Steamdeck would be great for rides on the subway, walking, and maybe some other things where you need to be fully mobile. I get that aspect of it. Though I can easily pull out just my tablet and play a ton of games that aren't "mobile games"
I've been gaming like this for longer than the steamdeck has been out. I saw the steamdeck and said "why would I want that?" And never got one.
You can stream to a display too. And then why not use steamlink in generall? As it is like the xbox app(?) wokrs
I play mostly on my Xbox. I got all my games and stuff downloaded on that.
If I am playing a PC game, it would be SC2, and I don't use steam. Haven't since CS source.
I carry around the keyboard always with my tablet because it's the screen protector when closed. There's no way I'd carry a separate keyboard and play SC2 on a 7.4 inch screen, that sounds miserable.
jncos ARE coming back
My niece showed up to Thanksgiving in a pair of them and was lecturing her brother on how he doesn't understand baggy clothes. I was like I lived through the last time these were popular and I still don't understand it.
I bought one of those gameboy sized emulator console. I like it, perfect for gba and snes games for me.
If you play emulators you can try Ayn Odin is an android device 200 usd or so and the best APU in it. People tells wonders of them. If you want more portability check Anbernic devices. And even then you can check retro corps and phawnx yt channels they go over almost every device available. Right now we have the best portable variety we ever dream to have.
With Emudeck, you also have like at least 5 handhelds in one. I’ll take the variety over portability in this scenario. :p
I bought myself an Anbernic, and I'm very pleased. GB pocket sized, can run PS1 and less demanding Dreamcast games
