TEL AVIV, Israel — The Israeli military says it has launched a new ground offensive in Gaza, sending troops back into areas they had retreated from during a nearly two-month ceasefire. This comes a day after Israel broke the ceasefire with a punishing series of airstrikes that killed more than 400 people, many of whom were children, and wounded hundreds more.

The IDF said it aims to expand what it calls the "security perimeter" separating Gaza and Israel, and to create a "partial buffer zone" between the north and south of the Gaza Strip. The IDF says it has "taken control and re-established" its presence in the Netzarim corridor, the large strip of land dividing Gaza's north and south that troops had occupied during the war and retreated from as part of a January ceasefire agreement.

You did it, Americans! You saved Gaza!

No one expected anything different from Trump. Biden was held accountable for refusing to listen to his base. If they ignore their base then they deserve to lose. Hopefully the days of voters allowing their politicians to do anything they want without consequence is over.

lmao.

Yes, I'm sure Donald "You'll never have to Vote Again" Trump is working hard to make that a reality, good job.

Much the way Biden said nothing will fundamentally change? And he was right, nothing changed for the rich while we got fucked. Good job.

Biden refused to break the law. If you want legislation to change taxes it has to go through Congress. It was 50 Republicans 2 independents and 48 Democrats for the first half and then 51 Republicans, 2 independents and 47 democrats in the second half of his administration. To fundamentally change things you either can do so legally by having majority support or illegally by overthrowing the government. Impeachment also takes at least 50% of Congress to file the articles. If Biden actually did something illegal he would have been impeached, yet while Republicans voted 50/51 against anything that mattered, they never could get all 51 of them to agree with impeachment, because Republicans were the ones who had to have agreed on EVERY piece of legislation that passed during his administration or it wouldn't have passed. Saying he was currupt was always a publicity stunt.

Do you think the Leahy Law wasn't violated? The support for Israel's genocide is bipartisan, they wouldn't impeach either a Dem or a Rep for it

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Yes support for Israel was bipartisan. With minority support of Congress to not support Israel.

Yeah, Nineteen Senators Voted to Block Weapons Shipments to Israel a minority of the Democratic Party. Most of them along with every Republican Senator did not want to block weapon shipments, in violation of the Leahy Law and of course International Law

That was the Senate not Congress, but yes those are the numbers. The Senate holds terms 3x longer than Congress and thus do not represent their constituents as accurately. They are a not proportionatly representing the population which is why many believe they should be reformed. (1 member represent less than 600,000 people in one state, while another member represents ~19,000,000 people.). Their votes both count as 1.

So while the majority of Democrats now have an unfavorable view of Israel, where as in 2022 the majority had a favorable view, this takes much longer to get representation in the Senate. Are there representatives that vote against their constituents beliefs, sure. But when a change happens that fast it is very hard for a Representative based government to be able to move fluid enough to represent what the people want vs the payment checks coming from their campaign funders.

A dictatorship is not the answer, but we need voting systems that get accurate representation of the majority of the population much more efficiently. Unfortunately that would make us more of a democracy and the oligarchs don't want that. Because we would vote to better the majority and shrink the wage gaps. Which inevitably makes it harder for them to control the media when they don't have as much money to buy all of it. Making more voting go to help the people and not their pockets.

There are plenty of policies that have majority support, even from Republican voters as well, that the Party has not implemented. On a weapons embargo, you're right that the switch happened relatively fast, due to the obvious reasons, but that doesn't excuse the Party from ignoring the issue. Especially during a critical election, when they are, at least in theory, supposed to be going after the most amount of votes they can. Representatives, both Senate and House, regularly hear from their constituents. They see the polls. It's their own decision to go against their constituents.

I'm all in favor of an improved democratic system that better represents the people, both locally and nationally. There are many many aspects of our 'democratic Republic' that is antidemocratic. But my main point is that the Parties have no genuine interest in what the people want. They are entirely beholden to the interests of corporate donors. And in that, I think we're in agreement.

The Democratic Party is no genuine opposition to the fascist threat of the Republican Party, precisely because of how much they gravitate towards the interests of corporate donors at the expense of the people.

Let's discus a truce with ruzzia now! Trump is the best negotiator! I think if we (not Ukraine) just give all Ukrainian territory to Putin then he probably won't murder the Ukrainians that are still alive. Wonderful negotiations. Let's discus the stoppage of violins coming in from Gina into mejico too.
