True, but you're asking a cross segment largely made up of people who didn't vote for him, so we can't answer your question. Best we can do is to say that apparently a giant contingent of our society is made up of people who are stupid, cruel, racist, and/or easily manipulated.

As far as I can tell, it boils down to some combination of three reasons: they're bigots; they're stupid; or they're selfish. Bigotry is self-explanatory. If they actually believed that he would do good things and help the country, then they're clearly stupid. If they didn't care how his actions hurt others but thought they'd help them financially, then they're selfish. Now, if they're selfish and not wealthy (wealthy being not like two houses and a couple millions in savings but rather own a couple yachts and an island) then they're also stupid on top of being selfish.
The United States has a good deal of cultural rot. As a culture, we're sick and have been for decades (and that's not even getting into the nation's original sin of slavery/racism). Carter rightly pointed it out in his "malaise speech." A large number of Americans are simply incapable of thinking about others outside themselves. We are incapable of taking on large projects for the collective good. And because of that, we defunded education for decades leading to the stupid, selfish population of today.
Reminder of how selfish people are: the pandemic. People couldn't fathom why they were expected to take precautions to avoid spreading it to other people
The worst part is that if you're selfish, you'd think Biden would be better. I miss that 30% increase in my stock portfolio vs the 25% decrease for no reason.
A long time ago, republicans needed an easy way to get voters to vote against their own interests and instead vote in the interest of the corporate overclass. Abortion. It’s genius. Make the preachers ultra wealthy by getting them to preach about something the Bible never seemed concerned about. Abortion. They’re murdering babies, you just have to get out and vote.
Eventually that strategy brought diminishing returns. They overturned Roe and the issue doesn’t have the same bite that it once had. They needed a new plan. Wait, I’ve got it. Trans people existing. Trans people bad, and they’re trying to assimilate your children by existing. They’re trans animals now, pooping in litter boxes at school. How long until you have to refer to your children by neopronouns under the threat of incarceration?
Seriously. This is how trump won the election. This issue is the issue they chose and it works. I hear it from my rightoid coworkers all the time. The GOP creates boogeymen to get idiots to the polls and it works, and the democrats have nothing to counter it.
Also the failing economy, you know the economy that the tarriffs would make great again. The same tarriffs that as of today has wiped quite a lot off the stock market. The same tarriffs everyone else said would hurt the economy.
Also I might add the non-voters that did not vote for Kamala because they did not find her compelling enough. Whilst the alternative was authoritarian, racist and mysognistic.
So its really a group effort by republicans and well…. others…. Not sure if those other idiots are left leaning or right leaning tbh but idiots they are all nonetheless.

I think the better question is why a third of Americans didn’t bother to vote against this.
Voter suppresssion was a significant tie breaker. Also keep in mind that a lot of people get shafted by both parties and have given up.

Yes, both parties let them down, but those were the option and one was clearly going to do more harm.
Edit: I recognise there were legitimate barriers for some but I have trouble believing that was the majority of non-voters
Felons who are denied the right to vote, and felons who are only felons because they were bullied into false guilty pleas. People whose lives have been impacted by the violent and bipartisan supported war on drugs, including family members who have been killed by ridiculously violent police actions. When things are bad enough for someone, the lesser of two evils is still evil enough that there is no incentive to participate.
I'm not talking about the majority of the people who didn't vote. There are a lot of apathetic and willfully ignorant non-voters we can blame. We can also blame those that chose not to vote on a single issue when Trump was the obviously worse outcome for that single issue.
Ultimately the people that are the most to blame are the people who voted for Republicans.

Sorry, I just can't blame people whose lives are destroyed by the system when they choose not to participate in the system. Choosing the lesser evil is fine for those of us where the lesser one isn't imprisoning family members through forced confessions or shooting relatives in no knock raids. Both available parties regularly campaign with being tough on crime and both follow through.
Nope, I refuse to blame those people for Trump winning when the alternate choice for them was more of the same.

A very significant portion of those who didnt vote were just people that couldn't be bothered. And another significant portion were those who just abstained because Harris wasn't tough enough on Isreal, and I'm sure those people are happy with that decision now. Palestine will be free any day now, surely. Yes there is a lot of voter suppression, but things were way too close with a lot of people not voting to claim that that made all the difference. They weren't ALL disenfranchised. Plenty just made a choice not to vote.

Votes being close is why voter suppression and not voting for Harris because she wasn't good enough to use as a vote against Trump had such a big impact.
But in any democracy there will be a significant portion of voters who either aren't engaged or are unwilling to stand with the available options. You can blame them, but you should really be blaming the Trump voters.

I'd have much rather had someone who was actually progressive, or at minimum, not supportive of Isreal's genocide. But that wasn't an option, was it? Harris and Biden's positions on Isreal were bullshit. But so was Trumps. At best they were a wash on that subject. And Trump was objectively worse in every other regard.
People that do not live in reality, that do not understand that under our system you often have to vote for the lesser of two evils to save yourself from the greater of them, are children that need to grow the fuck up.

It is a combination of things, voter suppression being one of them and a common tie breaker in battleground states.
When there is a shift, voter suppression is a common denominator on flipping close states. I'm just talking about one part of the overall issue, not saying it is the entire issue.

I've convinced myself that's a secondary concern. We did manage to elect a black human who was articulate, bright, and clean, but who also had a penis. I think that's the common trait.
True, the penis carries more weight than the skin color, but when you combine no penis and more melanin, it's a bigger handicap than just the sum of its parts.
I've heard that once you go Black, you never go back, so maybe there is a correlation between penis weight and skin color after all....
Ah, but remember that Trump also won against the one with no penis, less melanin, and a lot of buttery males. I think that is conclusive, scientific proof that most voters see a penis as a necessary quality in a President.
