And nothing will be done about it.
There’s no agency to ride to the rescue. It’s just the government and We The People, for better or worse.
I'm sure that Schumer and Jefferies will be looking for a nice bipartisanship solution to deny women the right to vote here.
Composing a sternly worded letter as we speak, which only 75% of the Dems will sign.
Maybe saint Luigi will visit us.
I don't think we're going to see any lasting improvements unless the Republicans are forcibly removed from power.
The real irony here is that this will probably hurt Republicans a lot more than it hurts Democrats.
Most of the Dems are fucking useless. The rest range into acquiescent. We have to stop this dichotomy. Dems had control and they couldn't even prevent Trump from running again, in spite of J6. They couldn't even stop deep throating Natanyahu long enough to beat him.
The Dems aren't going to save us and will have to be removed also.
This is what I find frustrating with Americans ... their country is literally burning down and not enough of them can be bothered to do anything about it.
They believe they can wait until the last possible minute of failure and like some Hollywood movie, they'll save everything at the last possible moment when things are at their darkest and save everything.
It isn't a Hollywood movie .... if no one does anything now or soon ... everything will be lost and no one will save it at the last moment
I got yelled down by a Canadian here on Lemmy yesterday (in much less kind language) that my protesting here in the USA is useless.
Because protesting in the way we typically do it IS useless. We need general strikes, road blockages, storming government buildings and occupying them, things that actually affect people.
Yelling at a building and inconveniencing absolutely no one accomplishes nothing. The media downplays or ignores, like the April 5th protest, anything that doesn't affect money.
The Catch-22 to that is it gives Trump and the GOP the excuse to declare martial law, as they're already itching to do, hugely extending the power of their autocracy.
You're mistaken if you believe they need a non-fabricated reason. The Reichstag will burn on schedule.
I believe that they're deliberately provoking dissenters into the slightest bit of violent action so that they can do exactly that.
Americans have been raised on a white washed version of the Civil Rights Movement that deliberately leaves out the tactics that actually enabled the Civil Rights Movement to succeed.
Canadian here. Prove all us naysayers wrong! (I'm pessimistic on America's future but I'm willing to believe there's a chance for change)
Keep going, Apr 19th, every day of action after, escalate until the country is yours again, instead of just for the billionaires, by the billionaires. Then let's talk.
And in the meantime all you people will just bitch and moan about Americans but do nothing to help but that bitching and that moaning. What are you trying to prove? That you've never helped anyone before? Or you're not willing to now? I don't think this sounds as good as you all think.
We're very helpfully and politely reminding you that we're your friends who spend money at your attractions and your best customers that bought your stuff, by refusing to travel and buy American for now. The booking level drops and car travel drops of 70% shows Canadians banding together and acting en masse. I am out protesting too with my fellow Canadian in front of Tesla, in front of consulates and embassies, in front of city and provincial legislative buildings, and we're poised to elect someone taking a strong but measured response against Trump rather than MAGA-mini.
Your president is hurting us as Canadians, and your president is hurting you as Americans. This requires action on both our parts, but on different levels since this is an American problem. It seems like the first challenge is getting the public at large to acknowledge that this is a problem. I think the rallies across the nation are a good first step. Keep going and the next steps to action will come as you organize. (Perhaps a general strike?)
Canadians talk a lot of shit for people who were about to elect a crazy right wing populist in a landslide and only changed their minds because our crazy right wing populist threatened annexation.
I have to give Trump and Musk props for that, showing the rest of the world how much a right-wing populist fascist government can turn their country into a clown-show.
Existential threats have a way of crystallizing one's priorities.
Thank you
I'm Canadian and I whole heartedly support you protesting .... my complaint is that not enough of you are doing it .... your entire country should be marching in the streets and shutting everything down
I'm American and I whole heartedly support Canada is a sovereign nation and the USA needs to respect that. That was the idea of my most recent protest sign the idea of "Hands off Canada!". At the last demonstration I saw two others also supporting Canada, but really there is just so much to protest that the authoritarians are doing to our country.
I agree with you on that.
Lots of people in power are fighting the Trump admin, in courtrooms and filings from individuals and state attorneys and in state congresses.
But you rarely hear about any of that because paperwork is boring.
what happened after the election is met with apathy and indifference, even from persecuted groups. while i was on reddit before banned, some people reported they met others that said "how does this affect me now, or i dint know he was running, or i dint bother voting"
Your observation is valid. It seems people don't like it but that is the reality. We are doing nothing to stop any of this. Peaceful protests are going to be ignored. People are just too comfortable in their lives to make any sort of sacrifice. Most people are up to their ears in debt. Most do not own that house, the car or the boat and are in debt beyond that. It's become the norm to live way beyond your actual means. Living pay check to pay check means losing everything you have. No one wants to do that. By the time we reach that point, I'm pretty sure there will definitely be nothing we can do.
It's been so obvious for many years that Republicans are not playing by the rules. The only counter is to also not play by the rules. Being polite and orderly when the country has already been stolen by Republicans in Congress, the White House and validated by the ones in the Supreme Court.. serves no one but those same Republicans.
I'm for skipping over the useless waste of time. I mourn the loss of the US. It wasn't perfect, far from it, but we had periods of progress towards a better future. Now, the game is rigged and is becoming even more so in favor of the Republican fascists. They control all the legal avenues and are corrupting them. How is it ever going to be possible to politely wrest power from them when the entire democratic process is rigged? The solution as I see it is for the blue states to leave the union. The red states are weaker in every way and where most of this poison comes from. I think joining Canada actually does make sense even if it was proposed partly in jest.
If we do this slowly, we become ever weaker as the fascist state gets stronger. Eliminate our rights, eliminating our voices and literally eliminating people. People are just not facing the reality of this situation. There is no legal recourse when the law backs anything the Republicans do and declares the Republican in the White House to be above the law.
Our time to prevent any of this happening has passed. People collectively shrugged and let the fascist state win. I just don't see how we are going to ever get back to how things were since people are not taking this seriously. If they were, we would already have beheaded the king and his enablers.
Resist. Secede.
I've given up. They put more effort in to banning you for telling them signs won't cut it this time than they do saving their country. Fucking pathetic.
Given up? Your account is two weeks old. A whole two weeks of effort. Wow.
Have fun with your dumpster fire of a country.
And when it reaches your shores let your comment comfort and protect you.
Big talk getting angrier and dumber
Technically, states get the final say in running elections, but I'm sure at least a few will fold.
