Apparently, he embellished a lot of his war stories and no evidence supporting his claims can be found, while there is direct evidence that contradicts his accounts.

Some stuff is true, some might be exaggerated and/or deliberately vague. But we don't know for sure and likely never will.
We know as an actor he had a flair for dramatics, so it wouldn't surprise me if he spiced up some stuff here and there juuuust a little.
I think it's fair to say this source can be thrown in the bin.
