Eyeing a rice cooker, it's really not a need-to-have but I might go for it... Edit: went for it and got one from my local asia market. :)

If you have a microwave, there's microwave rice cookers aswell.

[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Pro tip, you can also cook oatmeal and beans in it and it's better then any other way.

[–] Gelik@feddit.dk 4 points 1 day ago

Nice pro tip. Cooking Lentis probably too then.

I love mine. Get a cheap analogue one that works with a magnet. Perfect rice every time

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yup, for rice cookers, the cheaper the better. Anything with a gasket ain't worth the cleaning effort

Found a nice one for $90. On second thought I better check out the models at the local Asia Supermarket.

I've never actually used an expensive rice cooker, but the $15 one I got at [department store] works perfectly for me. This video sold me on the beautiful simplicity of it, and it's my favorite kitchen instrument

Of course Technology Connections made a video about Rice Cookers!! Thanks for sharing, gonna watch it when I can.

Yup, that's the type I meant above

His video also convinced me to get one

Nice one. Gonna check out the models at the Asia super market nearby. I mean rice is a staple in Asian kitchen!

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You won't regret it. They're such a nice thing to have and there are totally decent ones for pretty cheap.

[–] nokturne213@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have the one that Uncle Roger has that plays music when your rice is ready. I wish it was larger, but that is my only complaint.

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I use an instant pot and it works really well. I use it for other things too but honestly rice is probably what it gets used for the most.

[–] nokturne213@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

I have an instant pot as well, and used that for rice too. But it is nice to be able to have beans in the instant pot and rice in the rice cooker at the same time.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I have better results with my instant pot than any of the results I’ve gotten from the zojirushi. Plus the zojirushi takes 4-5 times as long.

[–] jrubal1462@mander.xyz 13 points 1 day ago

My wife forbids me from getting any large appliances for any 1 thing, so I could never convince her to get a ride cooker. Instead we got an InstaPot that we use exclusively to cook rice. It's way different (trust me)

[–] minyakcurry@monyet.cc 6 points 1 day ago

There's a "fast" option on most zojirushis. it should take about 1 hour if you select that. Source: I'm Asian

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My mom dislikes instant pot rice and likes zojirushi rice. IDK what the difference is but she can tell. Shrug.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There’s definitely nuance to how you do it in the instant pot, depending on what kind of rice it is. Zojirushi is a little more hands-off, and fool-proof. I just never decide 2 hours in advance that I want rice with dinner.
