WHY would anyone, in this day and age, volunteer to become a fascist bootlicking piece of shit member of the military? I can’t respect anyone who is ok with this.

[–] callouscomic@lemmy.zip 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

I've reached a point where I refuse any longer to hold any reverence or respect for current military. Just like cops. The military cock worship of parades, holidays, and discounts everywhere needs to go away.

How about discounts for teachers, or road workers, or social workers.

For me, it's a complete distaste for people that keep trying to slowly soft-boot a "military class" inside our society, by way of all the things you mention. The Romans had one of those; no thanks. Yes, let's throw more goodwill and financial support to people taking care of our kids and infrastructure instead.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

I'm proud of you making that change consciously, but damn you held on for a long time.

people don't get respect for what group they belong to. they get respect for who they are

A lot of these people were in the military before the second Trump admin made it obvious that they're going to have to work for an actual fascist dictatorship.

Secondly, for a lot of young people, the G.I Bill is the only real way to afford an education. You know that whole student debt issue that is crippling people financially for decades? Joining the military is a way to bypass that.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The uncomfortable pill is that at any point in the last many decades (ie: after abolishment of the draft) there was no good reason to join. WMDs? Known lie. Vietnam and not drafted? Known lie. (Tonkin was a lie)

That GI bill part is so very true and sad. It’s on purpose, of course. Expensive college and poor people means … more fodder.

The last honorable war we were in was WWII, anyone who signed up after the Korean war is a murderer.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I would posit only portions of our behavior in ww1 and ww2 were honorable. Supporting the creation of zionist colonialism and nuking a couple cities is … not honorable. Also, I tried to say it and it may have come across odd but those drafted are prisoners compared to those who volunteered. They are not the same.

[–] JandroDelSol@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah, true, we definitely did some fucked up shit in the world wars, but at least I can respect the people who joined.

Also, full sympathy to those who were drafted. I should have put more emphasis on "signed up"

[–] restingboredface@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Plus, it's not like you can just join the military and quit when you don't like how things are going. Unless things have changed radically, when you enlist you're signing up for 3,6 or even 8 years of service with very little recourse for getting out (without messing up your career and maybe even your life).

I'm sure for a lot of people working in the military is just a job. It's a luxury to choose jobs based on personal politics and a lot of people can't afford that now.

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I agree with a lot of the stuff being said here, but it doesn't really help the case of service members that they pretty overwhelmingly voted for Trump.

Yeah I know. Coming from military parents, I'm trying to not judge people too much since i know theres amazing people who serve, but I agree there's strong maga bro energy in the military and it sucks.

[–] 0x0@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago

Can you choose not to e deployed?

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Because abusing your fellow Americans sounds like fun?

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I reckon it does to some of these assholes, yeah. Plus they get to preboard flights!

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 8 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I just read that they were hiring thousands of new ICE agents to round up illegals. Who do you think is going to sign up for that duty? And get paid for it, too? Not the best and brightest, we know that.

[–] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Part of the transition from a democratic government to an oppressive regime requires filling the military and police with only your supporters and thugs. This is all part of the plan.

[–] KumaSudosa@feddit.dk 1 points 3 days ago

I think many Westerners have forgotten the inherent power of the police force and the military even in national discourse. We've grown accustomed to them being, perhaps thugish , but not a threat to the societal order and, at least to a certain degree, to the liberties that we generally enjoy. Legitimacy and power ultimately stems from military force and the monopoly of violence, and USA is hearing towards Gilead.

This is not what I'd call a "fun read", but it is a good one, and someone looked into this a bit.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Whoa.

But there were also a handful of women ICE applicants and a lot of men of color. The deportation officer applicant pool was, I felt, shockingly diverse—one might say it looked like America.

People attempting to hide in the belly of the beast, perhaps? I wonder how that's gonna work out.

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Sadly a lot of US-born and raised Hispanics can be just as racist, if not more racist, against migrants and refugees as white Americans. In particular Mexicans and Chicanos (who represent a massive portion of Border Patrol cops) tend to not like each other.

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I suspect many are just looking for a paycheck. ICE agents are slated to be pretty well paid from what I've read. We just handed over a historic amount of money to them as well, and even though I expect a large amount of institutional corruption, a significant percentage of it is going to go to personnel.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What’s an “illegal”, first of all. ;)

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 3 days ago

Anybody that Stephen "PeeWee Himmler" Miller deems it.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 4 points 3 days ago

There's a horrible number of people who either don't care or like it this way. I'm not sure which is more revolting.
