In Germany (and the west in general), articles about the GDR are similar to the slop we're being fed about the DPRK. Just a whole bunch of everything was totalitarian, dark and gray and you weren't allowed to feel anything but love for the party, while slaving away in the mines, or something like that. This article is no different.
I remember reading in MSM a year or two after the wall fell that people were complaining that at least in the GDR, they had food and work. I don't remember much more than that.
I remember not being allowed to say anything good about the GDR. It was often met with some "Yes, but [insert bad thing about the good thing]". It's a mantra.
That's sad. And probably still largely true in the West.
They had NO JEANS and BANANAS! This is literally worse than death!
