World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

So I think I missed something? Why is Trump thinking he has a say in this?
He's a self important blowhard with delusons of adaquacy. That's really all there is to it.
Since if Ukraine don't listen, US will cut off military aid.
Which unfortunately, Ukraine need since no one else can provide the numbers and TACO would likely even block EU and AU from buying US weapons if they were intended for Ukraine.
Meanwhile he's giving away Alaska to Putin.
It was obvious three days ago, but it's painfully obvious now why Trump has initiated quasi martial law in DC.
If he actually gave Alaska to Russia, the Republican majority in the Senate would be down to one seat. The House is a little harder to quantify, because Alaska has one seat that would be reaportioned somewhere, but it wouldn't help their thin House majority much, either.
Also, I'm pretty sure Alaska would say fuck you, we're an independent nation now. Russia could do fuck all about it. Their military is already at the breaking point, they don't have a lot of capacity to land equipment across the sea, Alaska has a very well armed population, and the geography is ideal for insurgent tactics.
would he really refuse to sell something?!
Well, he's a bitch, so yeah if his boss tells him so he's too little of a man to stick up to him.
Because the usa is still the major military power and he is the president now.
They aren't a major military power in Ukraine though.
They are a major backer though I think
One angle of analysis is, that this war is a proxy war between the world‘s hegemon and a state that does not want to be subjugated to their rule, but rather insists on their own sovereignty.
The power balance in the world tipped in the (now) hegemons favor with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since then the US further increased the pressure on the remnants of the old world power, Russia, through their military alliances they have with other, subjugated, western states.
The US works to stay the only power in the whole world, which is right now a so-called unipolar world, but lots of other countries aim for a multipolar world, because they don‘t want to suffer under the heavy boot of the US. Some might even strive to do things differently, but if they try, the bully of the world comes knocking.
~~The~~ Ukraine, which also wants sovereignty, only has a marginal voice in all of this.
That doesn't explain why Russia is invading an adjacent sovereign state. Ukraine "wants sovereignty" because it already has it and doesn't want it taken away.
It‘s nice that you want that kind of explanation, but that‘s not what I offered. You can argue strawmen all day, but your question wasn‘t asked.
What I’m saying is, that what Ukraine wants is just wholly irrelevant, as two nuclear powers have to figure out some stuff between themselves.
"Has" is a bit strong at the start of the war (2014). The revolution of dignity built actual sovereignty by slowly ousting the puppeteers. At the start of the major conflict (2022), the Ukrainian identity was only a fraction of how strong it is now.
In the end, there is perhaps some conspirational truth to what he said. Heavy hints that Russia invaded exactly after Maidan (2014), "separatists super unhappy with less ties with Russia and revolted too", in the same week, is the weakest shit I have ever seen. Happy for 25 years, suddenly revolted. And Russia brought a whole occupational army to help the poor peacefully seceding citizens. Doesnt take a genius to see it's just an already planned out show of force, "You don't suckle on great big Russia's teet, so we can slowly eat you? Then I will take your lands"
🤔🤔🤔
What’s up, smelling some conspiracy? OMG, you might just be on to something!
Or, go figure, my native language could just use definitive articles for what is just „Ukraine“ in the English language and I just made a grammatical mistake, which has nothing to do with the content of what has been said. How about you engage with that instead.
"The Ukraine" specifically referred to the Ukraine region of the USSR. Since it gained independence its just been "Ukraine." Typically anyone calling it "The Ukraine" is either misinformed or some flavor of Russian nationalist.
And you forgot the part where russian imperialism is basically working as a recruitment drive for NATO. If you want to call Ukraine a proxy war, sure, but who the fuck started it?
