Republicans have been stacking the deck for themselves for decades via voter suppression, gerrymandering and other tactics. Meanwhile, our other party has been infiltrated by corporate stooges who support their donors more than people. It wasn't a military invasion, but it was a slow erosion of the agency of the people.
Trump is the end result of 30+ years of a Christian nationalist take over of the US.
Those corporate stooges all won their primaries. America is fucked because Americans spent decades thinking that they could bring about change by listening to the right music and watching the right movies, and that everything else would just take care of itself.
