In all likelihood, he's going to be running for President against Trump in 2028, what are some reasons that I shouldn't I vote for Newsom?

[–] limer@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I suppose Newsom may win the presidency in 2028, and then caretake the country while doing the minimum for 4 to 8 years.

Just in time for another gop to win after that, and drive the USA to the brink of ruin even more than Trump

Back and forth. Same pattern the last two decades or more

Thing is once Trump's gone the GOP will be in crisis. The movement is not about ideals but the man himself

Fascist movements do not end when a leader goes.

And while the gop will be splintered, they will coalesce, eventually, in time to elect someone we will curse in the 2030s

[–] DigitalAudio@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

Depends on when the leader dies and how the movement splinters.

Because Germany famously remained Nazis after Hitler killed himself.

There was that other thing at about the same time ..uhhh.. oh yes - losing the war..which may have had something to do with it.

I would back a progressive candidate as hard as you can in the primary if possible.

Newsom has a similar vibe problem as Harris where people outside of California don’t really know them or like them much.

Personally I say fuck anyone from CA or NY (except AOC) we need a candidate from somewhere else more down to earth.

If the options in November 2028 come down to Newsom vs Trump (or whoever is his puppet), I'm still voting for Newsom. I won't be happy about it, but if we can't get a real progressive through the primaries, I'm still voting against the GOP and for the non-GOP candidate with the best chance of winning.

If the dems think a conservative candidate win, they will ratfuck progressives again, which is how we got Trump both times.

We need to make it absolutely clear that under no circumstances can the DNC let a conservative win the primary because they will lose the general. We did "yes, we know he sucks, but this is the most important election ever" with Biden, and he showed an entire generation that the dems are not an effective means to enacting positive social change, giving us back Trump.

Are there any progressives you are hoping will run? I'm not familiar with most politicians, would be helpful to know who's worth learning more about.

He platforms Charlie Kirk on his podcast, and his record for how he treats policy in relation to prisons is pretty shit. In 2022 he vetoed a bill that would end indefinite solitary confinement because, ya know, that makes sense. He’s a self-important loud-mouth who’s doing funny things in regards to attack Trump but absolutely is not what the US needs right now. They to yank that needle to the left and all they’re being offered is centrists and conservatives who don’t like to stir the pot even while fascism is fully present in their country.

Be realistic. A leftist has no chance to get elected in the USA. A centrist is the best you can do.

[–] SalamenceFury@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Is that why Zohran Mamdani has been blowing every centrist in New York out of the water?
