It is both. There is room in this world for two pronunciations of words.

[–] Imhotep@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Youre right let's call it a gif-jif

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I like it but lets make it harder and make it a spelling only palindrome with Gif-fiG

Now to to figure out if its pronounced jiffig or giffij.

[–] Imhotep@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Let's call it a jiffig-giffij

You're not helping... ;p

[–] kadaverin0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Never expected to see enlightened centrism show up in the GIF/JIF conflict.

It is etymology, rather than nerd bullying for who's correct about a false dichotomy.

I know people who pronounce it both ways, so I understand that it is both.

With a username like that, I would expect that since you're drunk on Apple wine & therefore probably screw it up yourself... 😜

Yeah, like you're the first to tell me that.

Explanation: Around the turn of the millennium, I was trying to come up with a username to use on a particular site that had a shortish character count limit for usernames. My goal was something related to the fact that I would often be making my points in arguments with "holier-than-thou" types by taking what they were saying, and turning it on its head so the offensive stuff was directed back at them.

I also happened to learn shortly beforehand that many years ago "'ape" was somewhat commonly used as a verb to mean "imitate" or "copy."

I'm sure you can figure the rest out.

And no I'm certainly not a drunk but enjoy the rich ethnobotanical history and culture of Hessen Äpfelwein but extremely superficial stereotypes are what they are.

[–] SanctimoniousApe 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Sorry, I meant no offense, but was instead trying perhaps too hard to make a funny. My sincerest apologies if it landed poorly. My only excuse is that I was up much later than usual, unable to sleep due to (trying to avoid) thinking about something I had to deal with today. Fortunately, it went much smoother than expected.

Once again, I apologize for being so crass.

Is that "Heßisch" or is "Hessen" the proper syntax, oder?

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Step away from the shit-pile. Your food fight isn't going to happen, no matter how many handfuls you lob at passers-by.

[–] SanctimoniousApe 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

*snicker* Is it still a food fight if it's in the form of shit?

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

You tell me, it's your menu. First, though: wash your hands, please. Damn dirty ape. 🤪

[–] SanctimoniousApe 2 points 1 day ago

But, of course! Wouldn't want to be unsanitary while I eat shit!

[–] hydrashok@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

No, the peanut butter pronunciation aficionados must be suppressed at all costs. It is the only path forward for peace.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

But we're the OG nerds. The ones who read about it online and discussed it in forums before anyone was saying it aloud casually. Pronounce it how you want but I will not stand for this soft-g erasure.

[–] SanctimoniousApe 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Hmm. Now I'm starting to doubt my conviction - when you put it like that, the first thought I have is of Trump. *shudder*

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago

That's how Evil wins.

This is not the correct take you heathen
