If you've only ever seen his children's books, it can come as a surprise just how political he was. Not all of his political cartoons have aged as well as this one, his depictions of minorities would be considered racist by modern standards.
His work definitely turned a corner in the 1950's. Looking at his early ads and anti-Japanese political cartoons, and then reading later works like Horton Hears A Who or The Sneeches, the tone and message is totally flipped.
