I'm looking for one or two individuals who are willing to help with moderating this instance. What does that entail?

  • resolving reports by users
  • moderating stuff that you stumble upon and doesn't conform to our rules
  • strictly following our rules
  • strictly following our code of conduct
    • particularly this rule might be hard to follow for some: The admins will not censor something just because we don’t like it - that means that ideologies you don't agree with are fine, as long as they follow other rules (like no hate speech). That means that promoting communism is fine even though you don't agree with it, saying holocaust didn't happen is not fine.

What you get in return? Nothing. Seriously, this is for you only if you'd like to help your fellow lemmings feel safer. If I implement a donation system and there is some surplus after the servers are paid for, we'll be splitting it equally, but don't expect much (if anything) out of it.

Important: If you do this long enough, you will see and read stuff that you don't like. Like transphobia, homophobia, misogyny, racism, people telling you to go kill yourself (or saying the same to others). You'll also most likely see child sexual abuse material (aka child porn) eventually. If you feel like any of the things is too much for you, don't apply.

I was a log analyst for many years for a large government department in Canada. I often said that while looking at porn all day at work seemed like it might be cool you were looking at other people's porn which was far less cool. I would call when I was on my way home from time to time and tell my wife that I was working on a difficult investigation. My wife and daughter knew that I would come home, take my coat off, and go directly into my home office. They knew not to speak to me or to try to hug me until I came out of my office. Sometimes it took a few minutes, sometimes hours.

It often isn't nice work but it's necessary work.

Thanks.

I really enjoyed the hunt. I used to scan through 16 million lines of logs per day. I used PERL scripts to do a lot of the sorting then scanned through the output from the PERL. I also had a script that downloaded every image that was included in my extract file. I found things every day and would make a few phone calls to users to say, "Everything you do online is logged and I can see EVERYTHING. I would like to remind you of your obligations under [policy]. None of this is in writing and there will be no record of this conversation. If I have to call you again things will be very different." That solved 99% of the problems. The other 1% sometimes got nasty.

My director told me when I started that it wasn't for everyone and it could have an impact on you that you wouldn't perceive right away. He said I could stop any time I needed to. He said if I needed help I would get it immediately. Having that out and that safety net really helped. He was working on a big CP case and thought that he was ok until he went home one night and was putting his coat in the closet when his wife came up behind him and hugged him from behind and he said, "GET THE FUCK OFF ME!" He immediately sought help after that to get him through the end of that investigation.

There was CP but I never had to deal with a CP investigation, just the occasional image that I had to deal with, but I did have a LOT of violence, violent porn, violent bondage, murder videos, etc. that I had to deal with. It was the environment that we worked in.

I have Asperger's which made me good with the logs and the hunt. It also made me able to isolate that stuff.
