Why??? We're experiencing a shortage of workers for the jobs nobody wants to do and there is an entire wave of people ready to get their foot in the door in our country. They're not criminals either, all the people I know who are immigrants from Spanish speaking countries are kind, practical, outgoing, intelligent and hard workers- they definitely know how to party too. I wish more people would learn Spanish so we could fix this disconnect between the US and its neighbors.

We're experiencing a shortage of workers for the jobs no one wants to do AT THE WAGES THE EMPLOERS WANT TO PAY TO PEOPLE WHO ARE VULNERABLE TO EXPLOITATION.

There's not a shortage of workers, but of wages.

Except that US has an aging population and it's going to get worse in future because the birth rates aren't that high. Closing off border is going to fuck US in the long run.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah, but by then all the old people making the decisions will have milked the system dry and died.

[-] paultimate14@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Oh I agree the closing off the border is dumb. Only a tiny fraction of illegal immigration is over the border anyways: the vast majority is people overstaying Visa's.

But the whole "aging population" issue is just more propaganda from corporate interests to try to find ways to get more workers and continue to suppress wages.

Why is the population aging in the first place? No one can afford to have children.

Here's what looks like an answer: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2023/jun/30/joe-biden-forced-build-donald-trumps-border-wall/

TLDR: This is a 2019 law passed by Congress during the baby hands administration. The Biden administration has been pretty careful not to overstep other branches of government(I think as a direct response to how flagrantly and harmfully baby hands used executive action), and while Biden returned wall money taken from the DoD, the rest of the wall money was explicitly designated by Congress for building the border wall in 2019 and Congress will not cancel that legislative order(wall funds), despite Biden asking Congress to cancel the 2019 wall funds law since arriving in office in 2020.

This post is misleading, the money is being legally used for a legislatively required purpose and any federal laws are being broken legislatively by Congress as a result of baby hands in 2019, not the Biden administration.

Thank you for sharing sources - it got real fucking quiet after these links lmao.

[-] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Haha, for sure. There was so much "clever zingers" getting thrown around that didn't add up logically or even hypothetically. Shout out to OlPatchy2Eyes, who found this link first but got buried in all of the comments and one uppers.

I just redistributed it to anybody who asked "why is this happening?"

[-] MightEnlightenYou@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Can you please provide a source for Biden repeatedly asking Congress to cancel the 2019 wall funds?

[-] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 year ago

Oh, Whitehouse.gov has an actual timeline.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/briefing-room/2021/06/11/fact-sheet-department-of-defense-and-department-of-homeland-security-plans-for-border-wall-funds/

TLDR, day he became president, Jan 2021, He terminated wall funding he had legal control over, that's what I mentioned about the money going back to the DOD, called for Congress to reallocate cheeto wall funding, that request has been active for 3 years, and there's an official reiteration by the white house for Congress to cancel Cheeto wall funding.

[-] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Hopefully, they at least switched contractors.

[-] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 year ago

Haha, I doubt it. It's the same law from 4 years ago so everything is probably all the same.

Are you referring to a specific debacle with the contractors, or just the fact that the walls fell apart so quickly and were immediately rendered ineffective after wasting billions of dollars building them?

[-] _stranger_@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago
[-] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Oh, yeah, that's what I'm saying. It's the exact same law from 2019

[-] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Well, the contractors that the trump administration used were just bratva fronts. So I would hope that we're at least not giving anymore money to violent pedophiles.

[-] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Oh, I don't know anything about this. Do you mind giving a little exposition or throwing up a source I can read? Thanks

[-] 2CatsOneBowl@aussie.zone 3 points 1 year ago

Wouldn't it be better if immigration was easier? That takes away the argument of illegals taking jobs blah blah.

[-] legenderic@feddit.ch -1 points 1 year ago

To take it away from the list of topics Trump can run with…

[-] systemglitch@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago

What a narrow view when one looks at historic pay adjusted for inflation. Your view literally supports a lower quality of life for everyone not willing to work for a slave wage, that illegal immigrants are willing to do.
