Looking through all the comments in this topic, it's sad to see that at this point we're arguing about defining labels, instead of solving problems.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 34 points 1 year ago

Well we can't solve problems. What else are we going to do?

[-] Wogi@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

Hookers and blow, and watch it all burn down

[-] CosmicCleric@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

You forgot blackjack.

[-] III@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Hear me out, we build a really big magnet, the kind that can draw in asteroids....

[-] Wogi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Do you have more information, maybe in a quarterly newsletter?

[-] Illuminostro@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

How much blow? Asking for a friend.

[-] CosmicCleric@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

You can, but you have to play the long game, and you have to be diligent.

[-] III@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Sadly, liberals don't have those super effective methods of keeping their eye on the long game that conservatives do, like hatred for people of color or hatred of women. Diligence is all they have.

Historically, you're very right, but I think they're starting to figure it out.

Worth mentioning at least, to get more exposure to the concept.

The only way to solve our problems is with an educated and united working class.

[-] snausagesinablanket@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

united working class

So never then, thanks.

[-] III@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Actual education could make your never a reality. But I guess from what I have been seeing, trans kids also use bathrooms and do sports so we might as well toss education into a dumpster. Because that's somehow a solution.

I mean, the UAW just kicked some c-suite ass.

Things just take time to change.

We have what you could refer to as a Gordian knot of interconnected societal problems. You can try to fix any one of them, but any solution will be hamstrung in the absence of a solution to a bunch of other ones.

For example, local live music scenes in cities across the US have been suffering for some time, and part of the reason is because bar revenue has gone down a lot. And part of the reason for that is because you can't drink as much if you have to drive home. And you have to drive home from the show because the public transit options to get there suck ass, and that's because our cities are too spread out, there's not enough residential or commercial density, and the roads have too many car lanes, and they're too wide, so everyone drives too fast on them and everything is too far apart to walk to, so no matter where you put your public transit, it's going to serve a small fraction of the people it should. And all of that is just one tiny microcosm of the problem: in order to revitalize the music scene in your city, you have to first fix its zoning laws, transit, and housing policies. It's enough to make you want to go see Gordian Knot on tour with Cattle Decapitation, except tickets are being sold via Ticketmaster so good fucking luck getting any.

Hmm almost like this post is specifically about labels. There are plenty of other places to discuss the problems.

Hmm almost like this post is specifically about labels.

There's a difference between identifying a group of people and then discussing how they act, vs trying to decide what is an identifier for a group of people.

I was expecting the former in this topic, but seeing just the ladder.

I'm with you. It's feels like there is an intentional effort to muddy up situations like these that should be talked about with nuance and understanding instead with reductiveness and handwaving. We aren't using labels as helpful shorthand, we're using them as weapons of dismal, and I frankly don't think this trend is without a nefarious architect.

Politics isn't about solving problems. It's about money and power. That's it.

[-] frezik@midwest.social 3 points 1 year ago

Politics is about getting people to work together towards a goal. This applies from the UN all the way down to community gardens. The power and money seeking are a corruption of its purpose.

[-] KevonLooney@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

and

The power and money seeking

are the same thing. Your goal may be to help people. The goal of conservatives is to help themselves. That's why they think liberals are misguided.

They think "Stupid liberals helping others, they're idiots. They could be helping themselves!"

[-] CosmicCleric@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Politics isn’t about solving problems. It’s about money and power.

Its both actually, in various degrees, based on the person/party.
