I completely understand what you are saying. However, this just creates a loop where:

  1. Republican is voted in - things get worse fast.
  2. Democrat is voted in - things get worse slowly.
  3. Republican is voted in because the Democrats saw that the Democrat didn't fix anything and Republicans were mad that a Democrat won last time.

There is no logical choice but to vote in a way to cause party shakeup (which ideally means to vote for a actual left party).

Oh I get the frustration. I just think we should skip the part where things get worse fast and stick with the slower option until we can figure out a better alternative.

Especially after Obama’s milquetoast 8 years, people are starting to realize there will never be a better alternative. I will vote Biden, because I have kids. But I understand the frustration of those that choose not to.

How can you get a different output when you never "change the inputs of the process?"

Also, think in terms of civil issues. Think about it for the whole population. While Republicans make civil issues much worse, Democrats don't make them any better. It's not like they launch campaigns to actively help minorities, (I'm not talking about money but support to combat the many stereotypes and systematic prejudice) just ignore issues in their entirety. It gives the impression that they are absolutely oblivious to our more sensitive issues.

Edit: My point is not to vote Ruplican but that voting Democrat hoping for a more liberal future doesn't make sense.

I get that.

Think if you had a house, and there is a spider infestation. The Dems offer nothing but sympathies, and the Republicans offer a flamethrower.

I'm going to choose the option that still leaves me with a house by the time the pest control guy arrives with a better solution.

[–] mightyfoolish@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

That's actually a great analogy. But still, who does the pest guy represent in this case? Some sort of hero Democrat that may or may not show up one day? It's like waiting for the messiah when you're agnostic. Maybe he'll show up... if such a thing exists.

[–] assassin_aragorn@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Maybe we need to learn how to become the pest guy then.

More young people need to run for office. If the pest guy doesn't exist, then it's on us to make them exist.

I'm imagining some alternative political framework, something disruptive and reformist. But exactly what that looks like, I have no idea.

I'm a Marxist at heart, but I am also realistic. There are a lot of options that sound great on paper but fall apart when put to the test. I don't know what the best alternative for the current situation is, but an alternative is definitely needed.

We're approaching interesting times with the ongoing automation of labor.
