Going over my life savings and investments with a CFP.

Hopefully they are a fee only fiduciary. Don't pay 1+% of your savings to them every year, that's also a dumb mistake.

They charge me less than 1% and typically return 5 to 6% (and minimize taxes).

I would make sure it's a passively managed fund with low expense ratios and little or no fees. An expense ratio of 0.10 or less is pretty common these days.
