The real question in my mind is who's doing the soundtrack?

[-] PM_ME_YOUR_ZOD_RUNES@sh.itjust.works 11 points 6 months ago

First thing I thought of as well. The Tron Legacy soundtrack is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. I've watched the movie over a dozen times because of it. It's one of the few soundtracks I listen to as is.

I’ve been thinking the same. I could see big names like Justice or DeadMau5 being tossed out there if they wanted to maintain the electronic feel and use a big act. It’s gonna be hard to top Daft Punk…

I also think Skrillex could be on that list of potential Electronic artists.

Skrillex would be a great choice. He's way more versatile than just the "dubby wubs" people think of him for.

Not to mention that he’s basically the whole reason that people mostly listen to electronic music now, or use electronic music as the background music to vocals. He’s one of the biggest producers, and especially after he dipped off making new music for a decade and just basically travelled around doing warehouse shows. He’s honed the electronic music craft for sure. I just don’t know if he can do sound scape music like Daft Punk did. It’s why I threw DeadMau5 out there. He’s done one movie already (possibly more?) and he’s also iconic. I just find the same sound scape wall to be hit.

What's the deadmau5 movie? I'd love to hear what it sounds like

The movie was called “Polar” and it was an early Netflix movie (2015). The movie was decent. Considering it was early into Netflix’s expansion into making originals.

Here’s an Apple Music link (if that’s what you use): https://music.apple.com/us/album/polar-music-from-the-netflix-film/1447629290

Justice is the closest 1:1 of Daft Punk in all of Electronic Music. Skrillex is arguably more versatile musically than Daft Punk and is credited with bringing electronic music main stream. Whether you like it or not those are two absolutely MASSIVE names.

Unless you hate the last Tron music sound track… which is iconic and one of the best movie sound tracks of all time.

Justice actually would be a good alternative but jeez talk about a tough act to follow. Yeah that Daft Punk album was fucking flawless.

There’s for sure something about those fat bass lines and those chord holds that just tickles the back of my brain while I’m listening to it. The album is like a movie within a movie. The opening of “The Grid” is beyond incredible. It sets a tone and it’s perfect.

I’ll admit I don’t know justice, I’ll have to check them out. Whether or not they’re massive names isn’t indicative of their fitting the tone needed. Both Skrillex and Deadmau5 have good tunes, but neither is what I would call comparable to Daft Punk.

Justice is basically the embodiment at this point of French House (which Daft Punk basically started). Justice’s Cross album is iconic and is probably one of the best early 2000s electronic albums.

Skrillex is incredibly talented. Far more than the mid 2000s wub-wub dubstep he produced. He’s definitely the biggest name in production and his talent continues to expand. His recent work with Four tet shows an expansion of his sound beyond typical hard style, dubstep, and screamo/metal. He’s still judged a lot for his early break through work, but those albums were responsible for bringing EDM to the masses. For better or worse.

DeadMau5 is the biggest asshole in EDM and he loves that. I think his ability to identify when to use sounds and how to properly play with them could lend to a more musical approach to the next Tron. Where Skrillex would have ideas from four yet using delicate electronic ambiance, deadmau5 would focus on lengthy chords to carry a scene. Something that the DP Tron album definitely had. Lots of chords left just sort of openly playing as the backdrop during whole movie scenes.

I say all this as I suspect that Disney may want another electronic artist to really create that sound. These are the names I would throw out in a meeting, but there’s more interesting names out there like Four Tet, ATTLAS, or even an Odesza for something weirder.
