General is for work visas, whereas Academic is for applying to university courses. Generally speaking.
You should always double check with the institution/company you're applying to, though.

You need the IELTS UKVI (general) test which is provided by the British Council specifically. It's the same exam, but stricter facilities. The 'normal' test won't be accepted by the Home Office.
General, Academic is when you pursue higher education. I believe even only from Master's level onward, for a Bachelor's the general is sufficient. And if you do get a British Bachelor's, you don't need to provide anything else for a Master's. So that's really only for foreign graduates who are pursuing an advanced degree course in the UK.
Not answering the question but if you studied in English outside of the UK it may be enough. But you need to certify that you studied in English through https://www.ecctis.com/visasandnationality . That is how I did it, and I think it is easier and can be quicker.
General community for news/discussion in the UK.
Less serious posts should go in !casualuk@feddit.uk or !andfinally@feddit.uk
More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.
Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.
Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.
Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.
If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.
Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.
Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.
