It's pretty impressive that integrated graphics can perform this well.

Performance benchmarks for mobile parts are meaningless without power consumption data.

[-] Addv4@lemmy.world 33 points 4 months ago

True. If this is around a 30 watt tdp, it would have amazing power consumption numbers (for reference, they were comparing it to a 1070 max q, which could have a max tdp of 115 watts).

[-] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 22 points 4 months ago

Wikipedia lists the 780M as 35-65W so 30W sounds a little too optimistic.

[-] Addv4@lemmy.world 17 points 4 months ago

Even then, that is pretty impressive with a cpu and gpu together (sorry, haven't looked at the newer cpu tdps in a bit, was thinking older mobile chips).

I have an older 680m in my laptop and it performs pretty well with a combined package power of under 45 watts. Usually the last 10% comes at like 50% increased power consumption so that may be where the 35-65 watt range comes from, but the final performance shouldn't be too far off.

I can guarantee you that with a Radeon running at full speed, it isn't going to be long. But seeing a browser time benchmark would be nice.

I always calculate performance /( TDP * price) when looking at new relevant PC parts, something most reviewers don't bother doing.

I guess this is a sign that I need to update my rig...

[-] PancakeBrock@lemmy.zip 10 points 4 months ago

Still rocking a gtx 1060 in my desktop and my laptop.

[-] xilliah@beehaw.org 3 points 4 months ago

It's a solid card, I finished the Witcher 3 on that. Just couldn't max it out.

[-] grillgamesh0028@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

when integrated graphics gets to an rtx2080, then its a sure sign for me.

I'll still be playing factorio on my rig for years to come though lol :P

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

Huh... So an integrated GPU now performs better than my GTX 1060 6GB?

Considering that I can still play games reasonably comfortably on my 1060 I find it pretty impressive.

Though... This is likely also writing on the wall for me to upgrade... At some point... Though honestly I dint feel like I'm really being limited by my GPU yet. The 1060 6GB is a pretty legendary card.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 3 points 4 months ago

1060 gang represent!

I was a bit worried because the new FFXIV expansion bought a new graphics engine with it, but if anything it performs even better than the old one.

If I want to play something with modern graphics, that's what my PS5 is for. The Talos Principle 2 demo made the 1060 cry, and obviously anything with raytracing is out.

I think the best thing you can do if you've got an older card is make sure you've got a GSync/FreeSync/VRR monitor for it, so those bits where it chugs down from 60fps go to a more manageable 40-50fps rather than skipping or tearing frames. I find I don't mess with graphics settings as much either.

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

The only recent game I've played that made my GPU cry was cyberpunk. But in the beginning that game was also a mess and now runs pretty decently.

Thing is with modern day AAA games, considering what unoptimised messes they're released in, I can't be sure if the issues are with my card or the game being shite.

But to be honest... I don't play that many AAA games anymore. The majority of them are incredibly uninteresting to me, are riddled with live service garbage, or are generally all pretty graphics and no substance.

[-] cevn@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

This rly interesting. I have the 780m and it seems sufficient for most games at 60fps but this could help push me up to 120 or 90.

[-] And009@reddthat.com 5 points 4 months ago

Was hoping to build a pc, the gpu shit show kept me away for years. Maybe a laptop would do.

[-] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Intel GPUs are somewhat reasonable I think

[-] And009@reddthat.com 1 points 4 months ago

I do plan to buy a mac m4 max machine for work, I'm guessing the performance drop would be ok to play titles like cyberpunk on medium high. Good enough

[-] cevn@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

I have system76 but cant rly recomend cuz the touchpad is not great and charging situation is bad. Thinking framework hopefully they land this hardware.

[-] And009@reddthat.com 2 points 4 months ago

Hoping xbox and ps switch to ARM for next gen. We'll have AAA games running on mobile in half a decade maybe

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Where is the point? One is a dedicated GPU, the other is an integrated graphics engine. One is for gamers (or was many years ago), the other for people using Word or Excel.

[-] Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg 9 points 4 months ago

I think the point is, it doesn't have to just be for Excel anymore.

I can actually play hunt showdown on my 13" Ryzen framework laptop. That's insane. This is saying it'll be a lot better on the upcoming chips, that's even more insane.

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 months ago

Steamdeck doesn’t have a dedicated gpu

[-] Schmuppes@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

I'm still rocking my Vega 56 on my main rig and now have to realize that it will soon be less powerful than AMD's iGPUs. Damn.

[-] Omega_Jimes@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago

That's actually an amazing achievement considering how popular the 1070/1650 are.
