WHY DO I NEED TO WATCH A COMMERCIAL BEFORE I CAN WATCH THE COMMERCIAL I WANT TO WATCH?

[-] concrete_baby@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago

Piggybacking on the top comment to post this ad-less link: https://piped.video/watch?v=XSRoimiLMGQ

Thanks, I was not about to sit through an ad just for an ad.

Copy/paste the title into NewPipe. Win!

[-] USSBurritoTruck@startrek.website 16 points 1 year ago

Oh dang, it's the macrovirus from that one VOY episode!

LDecks, you never fail to completely delight me.

[-] keeb420@kbin.social -2 points 1 year ago

It feels like they actually like star trek which is a departure from what I got from picard and the Kelvin timeline movies.

[-] USSBurritoTruck@startrek.website 15 points 1 year ago

Buddy, are you trying to make me pull an extra-ocular muscle from how hard my eyes just rolled?

If you like one aspect of the franchise you don't need to whine about another not being to your taste to express that. I don't shit on ENT every time I want to talk about DS9.

[-] NewEnglandRedshirt@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I love your username btw. It feels like a food truck Mariner would takk Boimler into running with her as part of a scheme to make money for her to pay off debts she owes to her Ferengi friend or something

Thanks!

When I decided to sign up a new account on reddit to talk about Trek, I asked myself what thing I could think of that people would want to see, and the answer was a Starfleet operated Tex-Mex food truck. So far the username has served me well.

I don't understand this view. Sure, they don't need to criticize one aspect of a franchise when they praise another, but why shouldn't they? Must praise and criticism remain always separate? If you feel DS9 is better in some respect to ENT, I don't see any issue with you contrasting the two.

Steve Shives, for example, dislikes the second season of Picard, and in his review of a recent episode of Strange New Worlds, that was brought up. He praised the episode of SNW while criticizing the season of Picard. Is that so bad?

You may not be comfortable addressing that specific example, but in general, what is the issue with contrasting things one likes with things one doesn't like within a single episode, a season, a series, a franchise, or pop culture at large?

Obviously people can say whatever they want, but I personally don't see any value in dragging something down when instead I could be lifting the thing I do like up. Like, imagine going in to the job at the end of the week and saying, "Hell yeah, I love Fridays!" and some sad sack co-worker is all, "Yeah, but don't you just hate Mondays?" Buddy, why? What would be the point in being so negative, when instead you could be positive?

Or, let's give another example: I personally think "Picard" was a bad television series, which started out kind of a mess, and got worse with every season. I know other people really enjoyed season three, but I think it is the single worse season of Trek, and it's not even a contest. Now, imagine if every time someone made a post praising, some other series or new episode, I jumped in with, "Yeah, at least this one was better than season three of PIC." What am I actually contributing to the conversation?

Furthermore, I don't consider, "This doesn't feel like [X]," to actually be criticism. Critique is detailed analysis. "I don't like this because it's not what I want it to be," is just whining. Critique is an important aspect of art, but too many people confuse their hot takes as valid criticism. You brought up Shives, and while he and I disagree on a lot of things -- and agree on others -- regarding Trek, I would never say that he is not detailed in his videos. Biased, sure, but we all are. I can't speak to the specific example you gave, but I know that at least in his scripted videos he generally isn't dropping hot takes like that. Sometimes they make their way into his more off the cuff unscripted videos, but I would be staggered if he's ever released something that was solely focused on saying one show is good because it isn't as bad as another show he dislikes.

Obviously people can say whatever they want, but I personally don’t see any value in dragging something down when instead I could be lifting the thing I do like up.

I can understand that. It's no fun to rain on someone else's parade. But I don't think there is no value, for example, in you expressing why you dislike Picard Season 3. You'd be dragging it down, but I don't think that's so wrong to do. It's okay to dislike things, and it's okay to say you dislike things. I think you agree with that.

Like, imagine going in to the job at the end of the week and saying, “Hell yeah, I love Fridays!” and some sad sack co-worker is all, “Yeah, but don’t you just hate Mondays?” Buddy, why? What would be the point in being so negative, when instead you could be positive?

The co-worker sounds like no fun to be around. But what if the conversation was this:

“Hell yeah, I love Fridays!”

“I'm with you on that, this week's been rough.”

The co-worker isn't trying to bring you down by reminding you of next Monday, they are trying to relate to you over your shared experience of the last week. You may dislike it, but I don't think it's the same as them going "but don't you just hate Mondays?", and I think that's more like what is happening when people talk about their dislike of some show.

Now, imagine if every time someone made a post praising, some other series or new episode, I jumped in with, “Yeah, at least this one was better than season three of PIC.” What am I actually contributing to the conversation?

Not much at all. But if you did it once, it wouldn't be fair for me to treat it the same as you doing it every time you reply to someone. I'm not suggesting you bring up your dislike of Picard in every conversation – I agree that would be annoying – but, if you have a point to make, I think it would be fine for you to on occasion bring up Picard's flaws to highlight the strengths of another show. I think it can even make your point stronger; instead of contextless praise, you can point to something specific to show how one thing is an improvement over another.

People do this with Voyager and Battlestar Galactica, where they praise BSG for commiting to the premise in a way Voyager didn't. I haven't seen Voyager and I haven't finished BSG, so I can't comment on whether I agree with that, but if someone agrees with that criticism and prefers BSG to VOY for that reason, I think they should feel free to criticize Voyager, to praise BSG, or to do both at the same time. Perhaps the contrast can be illuminating.

Furthermore, I don’t consider, “This doesn’t feel like [X],” to actually be criticism.

Sure, I agree with that. But if the criticism is bad, it's bad regardless of whether or not something else is being praised at the same time. It seems that you think it's worse to praise and to whine than to just whine.

So, canonically speaking, "Lower Decks" is right around the time Starfleet would find out about the impending Romulan supernova and begin redeploying the fleet for the evacuation.

Maybe a little heavy for this show, but also a convenient excuse to move the Cerritos to the front lines?

[-] Pickle_Jr@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

As other posters have said, I'm not the yugest star trek fan but I really have been enjoying lower decks. I am so pumped for this! I love this crew.

[-] VindictiveJudge@startrek.website 13 points 1 year ago

I was very skeptical when Lower Decks was announced and didn't watch any until the first season had finished, but it and Strange New Worlds are some of the most fun content to come out of this era of Trek. The whole show is just overflowing with love for the franchise.

[-] Piecemakers3Dprints@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

THIS!! A thousand times, this! 🥳 Both of these series have blown the doors off every single other fan-service attempt at reviving a classic, and I genuinely cannot remember the last time I was so excited for the week IRL to fly by simply so I could have one more episode! 🥰

[-] StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 11 points 1 year ago

Adding to the fun with TrekCore’s screencap-laden breakdown.

I defy folks here not to howl with laughter.

This made my afternoon.

[-] Maolmi@feddit.de 4 points 1 year ago

It's quite late where I am but yeah ... kind of made my night too. Lower Decks! Lower Decks!

[-] Nmyownworld@startrek.website 4 points 1 year ago

I am so looking forward to Lower Decks season 4. That screencap breakdown is great. So. Much. Goodness! I love the poster artwork. I'm going to watch this preview umpteenth times until the new season starts. Lower Decks! Lower Decks!

[-] Mojojojo1993@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago

Thank the Gods. Not a fan a Star Trek in the typical sense but have really enjoyed lower deck.

Doesn't take it's self too seriously and is just a bit mad. More please
