Windows should be twice in this photo

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Google maps, Thinkpad and YouTube.

Google started charging for the map api use of their service, there are ads in search and the ui is horrendous.

The one guy running altgrocery got charged hundreds of dollars because people flooded their website’s map in search of local independent grocers.

That’s why I’m on Organic maps instead now. It’s got 1% of the user base and 10.5% contributors as Google maps has. The UI is clean and the map is easy to contribute to.

When was this done? Because Windows has already been enshitified.

[-] tfw_no_toiletpaper@lemmy.world 37 points 5 days ago

Uhh I think windows was the first of them all lol

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 26 points 5 days ago

Netflix is leaning hard into trying to make you watch anything other than what you want to watch. This is such a weird obsession of tech companies. Websites do it all the time. I'm trying to read an article and they keep shoving pictures and links to other articles all over the middle of what I'm reading. Oh, and when I get half way through, they refresh the page so the can show me more things I'm not interested in. Fucking wankers.

[-] infinite_ass@leminal.space 2 points 2 days ago

I think they do it because getting you to go to the thing is the point, not watch the thing. Once you've gone to the thing they just want you to go to the next thing. Watching the thing is just wasted time for them.

It probably has to do with maximizing your exposure to advertising.

TikTok proves it works and keeps people with low attention spans addicted and more likely to watch ads. This should become an unethical practice like pyramid schemes. If your website shows a high percentage of unrelated content, it should be seized by the government.

Windows 7 was the last good windows OS, I will die on this hill

[-] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

I think we can hold this hill. I still have a machine running 7.

[-] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 days ago

10 was great but definitely shitted out with tracking BS you have to disable.

[-] Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world 20 points 5 days ago

10 was already deep into hiding settings and fragmenting the control panel.

11 is much worse.

and what's gonna happen with 12?

[-] Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

It wouldn't be impossible that 12 is an improvement. 10 was an improvement on 8. I think, as always, it'll never go back to a truely good OS, we will just get used to the crap bits.

I think windows is too entrenched in it's own version history to make good again. You'd need to start from scratch which simply won't happen within the windows brand.

I’m behind, how did Minecraft get enshittified? I catch the occasional stream and the game looks like it’s on another level from when I last played in like 2012

[-] njordomir@lemmy.world 16 points 5 days ago

Java edition is still generally okay, but MS has been trying to cram it in the typical mobile game mold with a store and stuff. If MS had made Minecraft, we'd probably have item stacks of 10 or 100 rather than 64. :D

[-] BonerMan@ani.social 24 points 5 days ago

Windows is constantly getting worse, it came before Minecraft

Minecraft is still really good if you just ignore the fact that Bedrock exists

[-] nobody158@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 days ago

Modded Java is the way to go.

[-] SatyrSack@feddit.org 9 points 5 days ago

Literally all of those are still incredibly popular and one of the leaders in their respective space. Sure, they have been "enshittified", but not killed off by it yet. .

When Windows ME is older than most posters...

[-] zipzoopaboop@lemmynsfw.com 7 points 5 days ago

Reddit is profitable for the first time ever

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Lies. They've been hauling in the money for a long time. They just hid it better.

[-] Blum0108@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

That should make the user experience better!

[-] ademir@lemmy.eco.br 1 points 4 days ago

oh sweet summer child

[-] SnowMeowXP@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

People do argue that Windows is in that process for so many years now.

I'm not the kind of person to say anything or anyone gave me the"ick", but that's exactly what Windows 8 did. And it's remained ever since..

[-] amw3i7dwgoblinlabs@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Yeah, but you can still enjoy 1.7.10 + 1.12.2 not the same could be said for all the other things

[-] lvxferre@mander.xyz 5 points 5 days ago

I'm still bitter about the SSP/SMP merge. 1.2.5 runs so good.
