Always a smokescreen to take away your rights. Epstein plead guilty in 2008 to trafficking children to nobody.

Pro tip: The Electronic Frontier Foundation is a non-profit which has been defending your right to privacy for many years. If you shop on Amazon, you can give a portion of the purchase price to EFF. You pay the same amount and daddy bezos gets a few less dollars. Use the affiliate link, not the smile link as smile has been sunsetted: https://www.eff.org/node/58741

Propro tip: Don’t buy from evilcorp and donate those savings directly to the EFF

[-] makeasnek@lemmy.ml 37 points 11 months ago

Agreed. Some people have to shop there for whatever reason. If that's you, the link is good to use :).

[-] yozul@beehaw.org 17 points 11 months ago

If I'm on Amazon it's for something that I need and can't get locally. There are no saving to donate. I'll probably have to spend a lot more, drive multiple hours, or both if I don't shop on Amazon. That's the only reason I ever use it.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 6 points 11 months ago

I tried to avoid Amazon for a product the other week, by buying direct from the person who was selling through Amazon.

They had their own store.

The prices were 50% more than they were charging on Amazon.

[-] funkycarrot@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 11 months ago

And there's a reason for that:

"[Amazon makes] every merchant that sells through their platform sign a "most favored nation" guarantee that they will not charge less for their products anywhere else – which means that the price is the same everywhere.

And that's the heart of the California antitrust case against Amazon: Amazon's market dominance makes it impossible to survive without offering your products on Amazon; to succeed there, you must turn over 35-45% of your gross to Amazon. That leads to higher prices on Amazon, and, thanks to the most favored nation deal, it pushes those same higher prices to every other retailer."

So basically the price on their website is what the company would charge you if they would want to be a sustainable business (or they're trying to recoup their losses from selling on Amazon).

There’s so much irony in this comment it cured my anemia

[-] Mnemnosyne@sh.itjust.works 81 points 11 months ago

Anything and everything that politicians propose to protect children, I am automatically against. It doesn't matter how good it sounds, if they say anything about protecting children, I'm opposed to it.

This is because they know that 'protect children' are magic words that let them get away with almost anything, and that's genuinely about the only time they say that anyway. Basically nothing the government does is actually to protect children.

[-] rifugee@lemmy.world 19 points 11 months ago

We had a recreational marijuana referendum in my state and the opposition signs said, "Save the Children." From what? I have no idea. Unsurprisingly, the vote failed.

Of course, it really helped that the state legislature sued to halt the referendum on grounds of improper procedure which caused the referendum to be put on the ballot as a special election instead of the mid-terms ballot. The judge dismissed the lawsuit, by the way.

The shit some people will do to stop other people from having a good time.

[-] eddie@lem.lucitt.social 6 points 11 months ago

God, that's totally depressing, and I totally agree with you.

Maybe if 30% of the population weren't trying to re-elect one of those people for president it would be easier.

It's so adorable how many Americans think that the oligarchs they support are different.

LMAO imagine being an apologist for pedophilia and human trafficking and then judging others.

Your current president literally raped a woman in 1993. Her name is Tara Reade.

Also, after winning the Nobel peace prize, Obama dropped an average of 30k bombs / year (80 per day) during his presidency, mostly on Muslim countries, 2, 3. In 2016 alone, dropped 26,171 bombs in the Middle East and North Africa, up 3000 from the previous year. The countries bombed include Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, and Somalia.

[-] doctorcrimson@lemmy.today -3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Tara Reade's story is purely hearsay, and she didn't come forward until Biden was running for president 26 years later. Everyone who worked in that office at that time said it would be totally out of character and they've never heard anything like it.

All that stuff about Obama is whataboutism and honestly the man looks like a saint compared to Trump and Bush.

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml -2 points 11 months ago

Attacking the victim and defending the rapist is precisely what I'd expect from somebody like you.

[-] doctorcrimson@lemmy.today -1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Listen, I can say that any number of past employers raped me, but why does that alone constitute evidence? Tara Reade has plenty enough to gain from lying, and nobody who worked there corroborates the claim. They even called it absurd.

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml -1 points 11 months ago

There is plenty of collaborating evidence to her claims and what you think she had to gain from chuds like you making her life hell as result I have no idea. You've exposed yourself as an utter piece of human garbage here.

[-] doctorcrimson@lemmy.today 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Present it. She literally published a book and accepted paid speaking events. Accusing Biden pays all of her bills. Last I heard the only people who were willing to side with Reade was her mother and her neighbor. If there were a sexual harassments claim in a government office then there are normally large paper trails and documented statements involved.

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml -1 points 11 months ago

I mean the most obvious piece https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/04/video-tara-reade-mother-joe-biden-larry-king.html I just love how you keep carrying water for this pedo, this is what he does in public when he's on camera

You're deplorable.

[-] doctorcrimson@lemmy.today 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Oh no he touched their shoulders. Clearly that justifies you comparing him to a literal rapist. /s

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml -2 points 11 months ago

He is a literal rapist, but people like you don't want to acknowledge it because you have no morals. Go to your workplace and try touching shoulders like that on your coworkers, let me know how long before your rapist ass gets fired for sexual harassment.

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml -3 points 11 months ago

Imagine using straw man arguments when you have no actual point to make.

[-] doctorcrimson@lemmy.today -2 points 11 months ago

My point is very clear, if people want Epstein's list of associates and people who paid him to see justice, then they need to vote accordingly, and definitely NOT for the guy who was good friends with Epstein and visited his island many times.

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml -5 points 11 months ago

Everybody on the list should be prosecuted, why aren't the democrats doing that?

[-] doctorcrimson@lemmy.today -2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

First of all, if a hearing is held in congress and not by the DOJ, then you're absolutely expecting too much to think anything will be done for justice of past crimes. I don't think the Senate or House can do anything on this topic other than keep the government funded. Historically, Congress has never shown the capacity to prosecute outside of changing how laws are enforced, which is moot because everything Epstein did is already illegal.

Second, I assure you there are active investigations to many of the names in the list, but not much incriminating evidence was found for the more than a thousand people he had some form of contact with over the last couple of years due to their discreet methods of conducting business. A lot of relevant court documents only recently became unsealed since trials started in 2016. Many new contacts were revealed at the end of the Virgin Islands Civil Lawsuit as well. Ghislaine Maxwell got 20 years, Sarah Kellen could be next as Federal Judges have expressed interest in charging her as early as the conclusion of the Maxwell trials in January 2022, JP Morgan have spent 13.8 Million USD on legal fees in the case and will pay 290 Million in reparations for facilitating the financial side of Epstein's business, Deutsche Bank will pay 75 Million, etc. To claim that nothing has happened and nothing is being done is ignorance.

As much as some people would love to blame and execute Bill Clinton, for example, all he ever did was borrow the man's plan on a trip to various charity medical sites across Africa that Epstein was unrelated to. So then where do you draw the line? Epstein made it his business to go to parties and shake hands with the influential. He disguised himself as a wealthy venture capitalist for over 2 decades before being outed as a trafficker.

In fact, almost half of Maxwell's charges were dropped because there wasn't enough concrete evidence and some of the charges overlapped with a previous conviction where they were granted immunity in a plea deal for state level charges. That's how hard it is to get a conviction for a crime with only witness testimony. It's like pulling nails. But it can be done.

What the hell would stop the government from just putting CSAM onto the phones of political rivals and upstarts to get them jailed without question?

And child molesters will run away scot-free on account of all this.

Isn't there anyone who will stop the dirty child molesters without wanting power in return? Anyone?

Anyone who will stop the government?

Anybody?

[-] ksdhf@lemmygrad.ml 20 points 11 months ago

Mfw the laws the gov said would be used to catch pedos are actually used on enviromental activists and union organisers.

[-] sooper_dooper_roofer@hexbear.net 4 points 11 months ago

transitive conclusion: all activists and organizers are pedos (and also step on kittens)

[-] doctorcrimson@lemmy.today 1 points 11 months ago

If we just elect union organizers and environmental activists to government, along with overrepresentation for minorities and a good balanced list of represented groups total, then there won't be a problem will there?

[-] ksdhf@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

To answer that question first we must understand why environmental activists and union organisers are targetted in the first place. Businesses make money polluting, clearing land etc. They also save money exploiting workers through poor workplace safety, terrible working conditions, low pay etc. It would be an impedance to capital to allow such individual in government to pass laws limiting profits.

In our liberal democractic world, money wins, no matter what the will of the people is or what the long term outcomes are, the owning class wins every time. It's not as if people haven't tried voting for the right person in the past. In many countries there already exist Labour parties established by workers unions. Despite this, business interests always win. Sometimes they throw a few crumbs at the plebs to appease them but it's always big business that dominates.

Another example, remember Barack Obama's election campaign in 2008? Change we can believe in? Then he enters the presidency and bails the banks out during the GFC and continued the war in Iraq. Coca cola hired paramilitaries to kill union organisers in Colombia. Biden campaigned on climate change action and then approved new gas piplines. I can go on and on.

Answering your question is very hard to do in a short reply. There are many books written about the topic. I recommend the following video: https://youtu.be/fcImfx8tunI?si=FfAJzdCq2qFX2RlI

Also, search the text "vote harder" in lemmygrad, it's a meme to mock liberals.

Won't anybody think of the figuratively poor polluting corporations?!

I remember one party passed HR 1 For the People Act through congress for it to die in the senate controlled by the other, but keep talking about how both sides don't want campaign finance reform.

[-] ksdhf@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 11 months ago

That's too bad, you should have voted harder.

[-] arin@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

I'm out of the loop, what's this?

[-] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 28 points 11 months ago

The gal that recruited and ran girls under Epstein's racket had a book of clients that turned up in evidence, and naturally the government isn't going after a single one of them because they're "special" aka rich and powerful

Are they also going to pay me to use their spy products? I'll just stop using electronic devices period and get into crafting. These fucking oligarchs are just so sure that we can't possibly live without plugging ourselves into their mass surveillance that when they flip the switch everyone will just say "oh well it was fun while it lasted, guess ill go along with it the new reality"
