What's a good vacuum for people with pets in Europe? (lemmy.world)

Hello, I got a comment on my previous post recommending I post it here as well.

I had the Philips one but after about a year it's suction changed to the point where it's hard for it to pick up cat litter now..

It must be able to deal with a lot of cat hair and litter.. and preferably be under 500 euros.

Of course I think a corded one is better for my purposes, and I have mostly hard floors with a few small rugs.

The problem is that every year the quality decreases, so it becomes difficult to know which vacuums will still be good. For example, someone may have purchased the same vacuum 5 years ago and think it's great but the one sold today might not compare

I've got a Miele C2 cat & dog. It's by far the best vacuum cleaner I've ever owned. I've had it for years though, so I can't say if new ones are the same quality.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Henry_vacuum_cleaners is pretty serious kit despite the looks. Can't say how good the filters are or other features, but they're strong and tough and pretty simple. UK company, not EU, though.

I have the same vacuum. Did you change the filter yet? I changed it after 2 years or so and it made a tremendous difference in suction power. Slurps up cat litter like my cats slurp up treats

Which filter? Do you mean the one inside the container with all the stuff that gets picked up, or the one on the outside of the vaccuum?

I haven't changed it yet but I presumed the motor is already worn out

I am almost certain your motor has not worn out, mine still works perfectly after 4 years of use. Please replace the filters first, which should be done yearly as is stated on the website here. Be sure to check if your specific model is compatible with the set though.

I haven't got a new a vacuum at least in a decade (more likely 15 years or few more), but I'm on a market for a new one too. Current one is Miele and it's been abused by dog hair, kids, house remodeling and pretty much whatever you can think of. It still functions but the plastic is starting to fall apart.

But, based on that one model, which hasn't been available in years, it seems to be a pretty reliable.

Yes can also recommend Miele, also just get the one with bags, it sounds inconvenient but it's really not that big a deal and it works so much better than bagless. The standard bagged/corded one is well within budget I believe.

I also vouch for bags. Just purchase two boxes with the vacuum and make a habit to rip the model number out of the empty box and add it to grocery list immediately after one is empty. They're pretty cheap, mostly made out of paper so they're not that bad for the environment and the bag acts as an additional filter which saves actual vacuum filters and motor in the long run.

I have a Bosch BGS5335 which I bought in 2019 or 2020. It is the best vacuum I've ever had. It's powerful and somehow quiet. Everything feels good quality and nowhere near worn. It's bagless and has a large container. If it ever dies I'll try to get it repaired.

I guess the newer version is called Bosch BGS41PET1

I'm very happy with Siemens. I also heard good stuff about Bosch, Miele and AEG (I think they're called Electrolux now)

Vorwerk is also pretty good, but expensive as hell

Picked up a "Electrolux Pure D8.2 Silence PD82-Animal" model last year and it's been pretty awesome. If you check the tech specs the noise level is really low (and actually delivers on the promise) but still has a much higher suction force than anything I've had before. The rotating hair removal accessory is crap though (not powered so just not comparable to a model that is), so no need for the animal version if price for other versions is better. Seems to still be on the market but stock limited as everything these days.

I think I've used one Electrolux somethingsilenceorsomething and it really was startlingly quiet and pretty good for normal use. No idea how durable it is, but it sticks in my mind as the only genuinely quiet vacuum I've ever used.

as you using your vacuum to clean up cat litter boxes?

If yes, I'd recommend looking into "Litter Locker". The company behind it is Canadian afaik (took me a good while to find that info when I looked it up though... the website is absolutely not ideal there). It's a smell-proof box where you can dump the dirty litter into, freeing up space in your vacuum amd allowing you to keep going for a while before having to throw it out. Should this be something for you, the requirements a vacuum has to meet definitely should go down or maybe your current one will still be fine then as you only mentioned suction power being too low for cat litter.
