Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

This is clearly an indication that, for them, it is NOT about the money.

These are POWER greedy people. Very unattractive to anyone with morals.

I learned how to look at these things a certain way along time ago thanks to Star Trek the next generation:

Captain Picard was, perhaps, one of the most powerful men in the entire galaxy. He was short, bald, and a principaled dork. And he was one of the most respected people in the entire galaxy because of it.

I don’t give a shit about the hair that I’ve lost, and I don’t give a shit about the fact that I’m 5 foot seven. My principles are unassailable, and I will defend my friends to the death, as well, I defend what is right.

Edit: although it may take some serious effort, I am capable of admitting when I am wrong

That’s what makes me a good person. Not what other people think of my hairline.

I also absolutely love how Stewart described Roddenberry standing up for him when a reported asked:

That came up at the very first press conference. A reporter asked Gene Roddenberry, ‘This doesn’t make any sense. You have a bald actor playing this part. Surely by the 24th century, they will have found a cure for male pattern baldness.’ And Gene Roddenberry said, ‘No, by the 24th century, no one will care.

That line goes hard.

That makes you and I, kin.

You cant ignore, though, that society has associated beauty with morality. It's not accurate but it's a human condition.

It's also why you get these conventially beautiful people as trumps mouth pieces. Not that people can't see through the lies and deceit but the more physically attractive they are the more buffer they have with the general populace.

Yeah, this is why I smoke and drink so much. I am already convinced. You don’t need to remind me why I waited a minute.

It’s all true, just, seriously, I’ll do it on my own time

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

See the fact that you have that strength of character is why you don't have to pull the stupid shit they all do.

I've been ugly, I've been hot. I've been unprincipled, I've been principled. I've been charmless, and I've been charming. Listen, I'm gonna keep aiming to be principled, charming, and hot in that order.

Being ugly sucks but you can easily get past it. Being off putting sucks, but people who know you know you. Being unprincipled seems great until your reputation is terrible and you have to live with yourself

He was short, bald, and a principaled dork.

Flashback of him getting stabed in the heart during a bar fight while in the academy

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago

Because of princples.

As someone else pointed out years ago (about Eric Trump, not known for his supermodel looks), there is an amount of wealth and influence where you don't have to look good, because everybody will treat you anyway as if you were the hottest person on the planet. Basically, you want to look ugly because it's a bizarre proof of wealth.

"Look at me, I am so rich, I can have all the supermodels, porn stars, and Hollywood actresses I want, and I don't even have to get plastic surgery or a personal trainer like a poor millionaire (ewww) on a budget."

Idk man, I bet there are a lot of people in the 10-50 million range that are far happier than oligarchs

I'm not trying to shit on you but I know for a fact there are some golden retrievers that only feel pure joy 24 hrs a day.

Not that I'm jealous or anything.

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 14 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

That doesn’t make me jealous.

The fact that we have bred a species to be happy and bring us happiness is, imo, like our best accomplishment.

Also, I can’t think of a single billionaire who is a huge fan of dogs.

Queen Elizabeth II

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago

I guess yeah but I see him as closer to Hitler and Hitler famously did like dogs

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah but those golden retrievers usually have food provided to them and they don't need to worry about it.

Even golden retrievers get rather depressed when malnourished, although the way we humans have bred them means they'll still look somewhat optimistic.

For humans the "money can't buy happiness" limit used to be something like 50-70k, closer to 50k in Europe and 70k in the US, but that was like 15 years ago so now it'd be something closer to 70k in Europe and 100 in the US. What that means is just that you can afford decent housing, transportation, all the necessities, and have a bit left over.

Up to that point money dramatically increases happiness. After that, it doesn't really have an effect anymore. Making a million a year doesn't mean you're any less happy than making a billion. But making 100k a year versus 30k a year is a massive difference.

Making a million a year doesn’t mean you’re any less happy than making a billion.

Eh, I had a boss years ago who owned a temp agency. His income from the business was about $40K per month and he lived in a beautiful beach house and drove a nice Mercedes and ate out at great restaurants every day etc. etc. No financial problems whatsoever but his friends were all west coast venture capitalists worth hundreds of millions of dollars and he absolutely seethed with resentment at how relatively poor he was.

It's the Emperor's New Clothes. Their perceptions of reality are so warped, that they think they look great

[–] ArbitraryValue@sh.itjust.works 19 points 5 days ago (5 children)

Bezos looks pretty good for a man his age.

[–] jewbacca117@lemmy.world 15 points 5 days ago

Have you seen pics of Bezos lately? Dude looks like he's been mainlining HGH.

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Terrible sense of style though. Always so incredibly tacky.

[–] Lifecoach5000@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like music. Not a good look IMO

Yeah but we're talking about unlimited resources and best he can do is retired cop..

[–] kat_angstrom@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Some people are so poor that all they have is money

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 16 points 5 days ago

I'm amused by the idea that the more rich and powerful these people grow, the more certain "common" things are pretty much out of reach for them: regular friendship, love, family ties. Everything is about power balance and tit-for-tat with these guys. Good luck finding anyone who loves you for "you" and isn't after your fortune. And even if you do, good luck recognizing it and acting on it!

[–] JohnDClay@sh.itjust.works 13 points 5 days ago (3 children)

I mean, he used to look like this

Elon musk in PayPal days, blading

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

The improvement is marginal at best.

At least in this picture you can tell he still has the natural desire to eat cheese.

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 8 points 5 days ago

Honestly he looks better in that picture.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)
[–] athairmor@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Weird how he can have no chin and look like that character.

[–] 3dmvr@lemm.ee 6 points 5 days ago

Every once in a while I temporarily tolerate a billionaire for pushing something I like, like zuckerberg with vr, in my head bezos is why these prime shows with no viewers and big budgets keep getting made.
Its probably not them, but this is my coping mechanism for dealing with their existence.

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's OK, really beautiful people are freaks and I like you just how you are.

Awwww, thank you.

[–] Magister@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Remember Steve Jobs, he was a prick and never showered, he stunk like crazy

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

No, I never did get the opportunity to smell steve jobs. I bet he still smells pretty awful, though.

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

After a while the smell goes away.

You can't buy a healthy lifestyle. You'll have to work out and eat nutritious food by yourself.
