Etymology

Borrowed from Swedish salmiak, ultimately from a confluence of Latin sal armoniacum and Latin sal ammoniacum.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈsɑlmiɑkːi/, [ˈs̠ɑ̝lmiˌɑ̝kːi]
  • Rhymes: -ɑkːi
  • Hyphenation(key): sal‧mi‧ak‧ki

Noun

salmiakki

  1. salty licorice, salty liquorice
Salmiakista ei pidä, ellei siitä opi pitämään. You can't like salty licorice without learning to like it.
  2. (mineralogy, chemistry, archaic) sal ammoniac
    Synonym: ammoniumkloridi
  3. (colloquial) rhombus (shape)
    Synonyms: salmiakkiruutu, vinoneliö, neljäkäs

Nice content on etymology. I didn't know sal ammoniacum before!

Only tangentially related, but that stuff is potent.

I've only had it once, when a friend brought some back here to the US, but it is an experience I doubt I'll ever forget.
