Playing on modified Marathon setting: 100x science cost instead of 4x

I think I'm finally over the challenging part of the challenge. Until now it was extremely uncertain whether my base would both survive biter evolution on Nauvis and manage to claim enough resources to get to space and Vulcanus for "unlimited" iron and copper.

At some point the biters evolved past my tech: I can't assault behemoth biter bases with only low damage tech red bullets, effectively making any unclaimed resources unavailable until I could tech up (which would need resources).

I can, however, guard against behemoth biters with walls of red bullet turrets and flamethrowers.

Vulcanus also turned out to not be as straightforward as I hoped. While I do get a lot of resources in the starting area, the initial tugsten patches are guarded by small demolishers. Fortunately, 100 turrets of red ammo and spamming poison capsules proved enough to clear out a significant area and secure enough tungsten to get me far up the tech tree.

I feel like I "won" the challenge now that I can safely tech past any future hurdles, and the remaining tasks are just putting in the hours. Not sure if I'll keep playing past this, but it was a ton of fun. :)

For anyone who wants to see a true maniac attempt what I assumed to be impossible: Michael Hendriks may be able to win with 1000x science cost, exploiting deep knowledge of the biter expansion algorithm, spending tens of hours filling the map with pipes, and meticulous calculation of resource usage through the tech tree carefully adapting or not adapting quality, modules etc.

And I thought me and my mates deathworld marathon run was rough...

I'm still too afraid to try deathworld, haha. What sort of strategies do you use to manage it?

Oh wow, I too saw Michael Hendricks 1000x science cost and wanted to try myself. But same as you 1000x was a bit too insane. But I "just" went with 20x as I don't have that much time to play, and wanted to actually be able to complete the game without having to spend years haha.

I actually went with fulgora first, because I wanted to try building a rare quality mall. It half work, but not as good as I had hoped. I have gone to vulcanus also, and made 1k spm for red/green/blue/metallurgy there. And now I'm on gleba trying to unlock t3 prod modules. And then I'll go back to vulcanus and make purple/yellow there also.

Maybe I'll post some screenshots if I remember tomorrow

Man, your bases are so neat! Mine look like bird's nests.

I'm currently on a rampage to upgrade Nauvis with foundries, and it's a chance for clean up, but it's still going to be slave to the rail lines.

Also, I try to use terrain as much as possible, even in late game where wall is cheap. I don't know; ignoring all that useful cliff seems wasteful. And on Vulcanis, I try to route around lava, rather than paving over it or using elevated, so it looks less like a road and more like a deer path.

I wasn't self-conscious about it until now.

That's interesting! I normally play the opposite, and rush to get cliff explosives and all the landfills before scaling up. In this playthrough I was forced to scale up without any of that, and mostly with yellow belts, so this was a fun opportunity to play along with the landscape.

Very impressive. Looking at the layout of your base it is very neat. I do think 100x is a little insane though.

Oh wow, "neat" was the last word I thought would come to mind. :D Walls pushed out as far as I was able, and everything else just placed wherever there was space, connected by train.
