I feel personally attacked

[-] lobut@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago

Yeah man, I came here to laugh and not get all defensive! :(

I feel this. I've been dreaming of running my own internet radio station ever since SHOUTcast first came out. Well it only took 25 years but I finally made it happen, yet I'm too scared to promote it cause I'm afraid that no one will want to join on as a DJ or even tune in. So here I sit, paying for the server space every month for nothing, lying to myself that this'll finally be the day that I release it to the public...

Edit: Thanks for your interest, everyone! Okay here's the link:

https://radiolemmy.com Community: https://lemm.ee/c/radiolemmy

BTW I'll need DJs, and curators to suggest songs for rotation when no DJ is on. If you want to be a DJ, click Join at the top right of the page, No experience necessary. Use your own software/hardware, or there's a Web DJ interface you can use if you don't have any gear. I won't be on the Discord I made just yet, but I'll check the website from time to time for applications.

And no sign up necessary if you just want to suggest a tune for rotation. Just click "Suggest" at the top! Thanks again for helping make my dream come true.

Lastly, I'm a DJ myself so if this station takes off, expect regular 3-5 hour sessions from me!

Feel free to DM me a link to check out.

[-] Psythik@lemm.ee 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Edit: Check your inbox

I will once I work up the courage, lol. Plan on making a post about it too once I'm ready to launch. (Still not sure which community would be appropriate to make such a post. There isn't exactly an active community of DJs on Lemmy, at least not any I could find...)

If you don't get a DM in a few hours, check back again tomorrow.

[-] AlecSadler@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago

Sounds good. I promise no judgment. I'll follow, tune in periodically, and support however I can from where I am.

And if you don't want it shared, so be it. I'll respect that.

And if you want feedback or critique, feel free to ask, but I'll likely keep it to myself otherwise.

[-] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

I'm interested in this as well

I've always wanted that too. Don't worry, there are dozens of us. I used to DJ for a few SHOUTcast stations back in the day.

Send me a link, I'd be happy to check it out!

Unfortunately the link is dead.

[-] Psythik@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah it's cause I just switched domains. Bad timing; sorry about that. It may take up to 12-24 hours for all DNS servers to update and correctly point to the website.

EDIT: Should be working now. (At least it is on my end)

[-] ultratiem@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 year ago

My dream’s only dead if I don’t renew.

[-] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 year ago

Is it this time of the year again?

[-] 8000mark@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 1 year ago

This hits way too close to home.

[-] lowleveldata@programming.dev 17 points 1 year ago

It's not even a hard pick tho. Will turn on auto payment in a heart beat if it's an option.

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Is it not an option usually?

[-] ultratiem@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Most times it defaults to that state and you have to actively turn it off with extra steps.

[-] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 year ago

pay $12 cause you're terrified that you'll decide to do something later but you're so scared someone else will take it

[-] rwhitisissle@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 year ago

Jokes on you guys. I only use mine for self-hosting crap nobody except me wanted in the first place.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I have one purely for a spam email address that I rarely check. I just needed to get off of big brother Google's platforms and I wanted something easy to say and type.

[-] Arghblarg@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 year ago

What dream? A domain's quite practical for self-hosting one's own server for all sorts of things. Doesn't have to be the "next big thing". This is the way the internet used to be.

[-] OsrsNeedsF2P@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 year ago

Perhaps your dream of self hosting is dead

[-] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 4 points 1 year ago

Right? A little script auto to update your DNS records assuming you don't have a static IP, now you can remote in much easier. And don't have to memorize your IP.

[-] ___@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Most routers have dynamic dns updaters built in nowadays.

[-] hedgehog@ttrpg.network 1 points 1 year ago

And you don’t even have to write the script yourself. Depending on your DNS provider, you can probably use https://github.com/qdm12/ddns-updater or something similar to keep it updated.

I personally use it hosted in Docker with Cloudflare on their free plan and it works great. I tried to set it up with Namecheap initially but they have some requirements for API access, some of which include an allowlisted IP address for API clients. I didn’t want to source, configure, and rely on a static IP jump server just for DNS updates, so I changed the DNS provider (but didn’t transfer the domains).

[-] wax@lemmy.wtf 1 points 1 year ago

I've been meaning to get one to use as a fixed email, even if I change the underlying email provider. Not able to select a domain name though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ naming is always the hardest part

[-] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 1 year ago

I'm running email on mine so I gotta renew them

[-] quicken@aussie.zone 11 points 1 year ago

All I see is: Pay $12 or Pay $12

[-] ensignrick@startrek.website 11 points 1 year ago

Lolllll. Happened like two days ago.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago

$12?!?! When was this meme made?

[-] FractalsInfinite@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

12 dollars? Just buy a .site doman from namecheep for $2 instead. You are guarantied to afford 6 times the normal level of hopes and dreams that way (/s for the second half, but this is what I do for my site)

[-] And009@reddthat.com 3 points 1 year ago

If you miss a payment the renewal is expensive

Hense why its a good idea to enable auto renewal or set a reminder

[-] Thann@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago

Same thing with servers, but its monthly

[-] oriond@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

So true for me, https://foro.buceoluegoexisto.com It's really sad. :(

  1. Reverse engineer local service.
  2. Code MITM-like software/proxy server.
  3. Order domain and dns record.
  4. Get friends & relatives.

Up to 10 simultaneus users now are using my software. Would be hard to change domain now.. 😅 Luckily I purchased it for 5 years for 25€.

[-] limelight79@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

Ah. This just reminded me that one of mine was about to expire. Thanks!

[-] PeWu@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah, my domain expired, and can't renew it because the site I got it from is fucked up...
