Laura Loomer lamented that the new pope ‘is anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis,’ adding that it’s ‘GROSS’ that he now leads the Catholic Church

It didn’t take long for right-wing media figures and MAGA provocateurs to cry out in rage over the election of Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV after it was revealed that he’d publicly criticized JD Vance and expressed sympathy for immigrants and George Floyd.

Despite feeling national pride over the fact that the Chicago-born Prevost has become the first American pope in history, conservative pundits and Trump loyalists fumed over the “WOKE MARXIST POPE” and complained that he is “worse than Francis,” referencing the previous pontiff known for his progressive values.

Even before the “dark horse” American cardinal was elected the 267th pope, former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon warned about Prevost’s views, claiming that he would be a poor choice for the MAGA movement.

As I told my mother and father yesterday, I firmly believe that under the Trump regime that if for any reason this new Pope comes to America that he'll either be captured and tortured before being killed or just straight up killed for being a traitor.

This article basically just gives a platform to right wing nutjons and their conspiracy theories

Why isn't there a single quote from Pope Leo XIV?

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 35 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Whaaaaat? This isn't what Jesus would have wanted!

Greed 4:19 "You get your own fish and loaves. I paid for this. I can throw it on the floor if I want. Suck it up libtards!"

That's my favorite Bible story.

Thinking a second about this, he literally pwned MAGA

The entire conservative line of thought is backed by Christianity and American exceptionalism, and now there comes an American pope and tells "You're not following the God's word". That's a damn checkmate.

Wonder how many MAGA supporters, many of which are devout Christians, will start questioning their beliefs.

Also, lol, a Marxist Pope is top comedy.

[–] muusemuuse@lemm.ee 21 points 11 hours ago

Christianity the religion and Christianity the political platform are different things. The con requires you to believe they are the same thing.

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 56 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

They won't question their Christian beliefs for a single second because they didn't have any in the first place. They'll turn their backs and say "The Pope went woke," still call themselves godly Christians, and continue to spread hate. During that whole time they will never question whether or not they're Christian, they'll just hate the Pope too.

[–] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 25 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, exactly this. It can be confusing because they call themselves Christians, loudly and frequently - but their attitudes and beliefs have sweet fuck all to do with the teachings of Christ.

It's kinda like the way they use 'Marxist' for anyone left of Mussolini. I'm not sure if it's a deliberate attempt to shift definitions, or if they don't understand what the words actually mean. Wankers.

Yeah I mean, it's not like Catholicism is the only flavor of Christianity.

The whole reason the USA even exists today is because a bunch of shitty religious people got ousted from England.

I know a lot of people still view the Pope as the head of Christianity but there are many Christians who would not see it that way. Many who would dismiss the Pope with a wave of the hand and not a care in the world.

The evangelical right wing Christian movement in America certainly does not give a fuck about the Pope based on what I've seen.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

They don't, but the neofascist movement loves the aesthetic of catholicism. Its why Vance converted. In fact I'd say that pointing to Vance and Biden as the two sides of modern American catholicism is a reasonable framing (we're gonna ignore the catholic workers because though their deeds are great, their numbers are few).

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

That is the actual win, the legitimate aesthetic they seek has denied them. It's absolutely a similarity Trump's administration has with the Nazis. They both never think about what the church actually is, they both just like the authority the Holy Sea has and the ceremony of it all. It's great to watch an American Pope hold his ground. I wonder how long until Trump starts publicly ranting about him. I give it until this weekend.

[–] AFaithfulNihilist@lemmy.world 29 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Much of the American Christian establishment is the type of Protestant that does not consider Catholics to be Christian.

I know that doesn't really make a whole lot of sense but that's how Americans "do religion".

Baptists don't care what the Pope has to say, seventh-day Adventists think he is actually the Antichrist. Most American Catholics don't really care what the Vatican has to say and would resent the implication that they're supposed to give a shit about the Pope's opinion.

Americans just don't do religion very well.

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

It amazes me that Catholics will ride along with that bandwagon. Like when they get that Christian Nation they want, when freedom of religion is ditched in favour of state endorsed religion, and all that remains is to decide whether it's going to be a Protestant Nation or a Catholic Nation, do they actually think it's going to go their way?

Christianity is the big umbrella of faith, Catholics are inside that umbrella and have been not so popular compared to other factions. Pope's are catholic.

Personally I think it's all horse shit but that's just me.

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 5 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

I didn't realize Catholics comprise less than Protestants. Still, 22% of Americans identifying as Roman Catholics is a big deal.

Are they actually saying "Marxist" now? That's new.

[–] torrentialgrain@lemm.ee 2 points 8 hours ago

They’ve been saying that for years.

[–] RedditIsDeddit@lemmy.world 10 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

MAGA needs to learn new words. Radical leftist marxist communists (which are all contradictory things) is pretty fucking stupid.

[–] Goodmorningsunshine@lemmy.world 8 points 10 hours ago

MAGA? Learn?

[–] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 8 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

You're only an American If __________________

[–] ours@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Funny thing is he's the first American pope.

You'd think that counts for something and they would be yelling "USA! USA! USA!". But nah, a pope espousing some actual Christian values is terrible according to them.

I didn't care about who the new pope was but he's getting more sympathetic by the minute.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

“In case you're wondering why they picked an American to be a Pope for the first time in history,” MAGA influencer Vince...

Lol, the pope that literally just died was from Argentina, you dumbass

[–] theherk@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago (7 children)

I don’t understand the point you’re making. The new pope is the first American pope.

I'm an atheist and I have no use for any religion, but if this new Pope pisses off MAGA, I could become a fan.

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 75 points 18 hours ago (5 children)

You know things are bad if the Catholic church is a last bastion for progressive social change

[–] barsoap@lemm.ee 13 points 11 hours ago (6 children)

They're a ratchet. Calling them progressive would be a straight lie but they do go with the times, maybe 100 years behind, picking up all stragglers that can reasonably be picked up.

In 50 years, mark my words, they will marry gay couples, or at least bless them before the congregation (without sacrament, or maybe they'll invent a new, same-but-different, sacrament). Why? Because the Vatican recently gave priests authorisation to bless gay couples in private: Blessing the relationship, not just the individuals. Click.
