The Justice Department said it filed charges Monday against Rep. LaMonica McIver, D-N.J., alleging she assaulted law enforcement this month at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Newark.

The acting U.S. attorney for New Jersey, Alina Habba, made the announcement on X, where she accused McIver of “assaulting, impeding and interfering with law enforcement.”

McIver called the charges “purely political” in a statement and said she looks forward “to the truth being laid out clearly in court.”

This is one court case I'll definitely be watching.

With ICE operating as a literal bunch of unidentifiable, masked kidnappers, it only makes sense that people are intervening. I'm also curious to see when one of these self-styled freedom fighters will emerge to stop one of these ICE kidnappings, in fact.

Not on corporate media or social media.

But, it could leak out to the web on the fediverse.

Fascists don't declare fascism. They just start arresting anti-fascists.

Same time as they dropped charges against Newark Mayor Ras Baraka for the same exact thing at the same event. They know these charges are BS. There is no logical reason to be putting these charges, especially a week later, other than intimidation

It's such a performative thing. What other person would they announce the charges on X instead of arresting the person first?

(It is all serious and horrible and weaponization of the justice department to scare people into submission)
