Documenting hate speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse. Memes are welcome!

What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

Honestly there is a reason Lemmy doesn't have great mod tools

[–] Artyom@lemm.ee 14 points 16 hours ago

I feel like throwing a fit about the political alignment of a platform fundamentally built on democratic principles is always a self-own. "It's not fair that people don't upvote my unpopular opinions!"

[–] QueenHawlSera@sh.itjust.works 12 points 16 hours ago

There are sadly leftists who have embraced censorship as a virtue.

But I am one socialist who never will.

[–] Jiggle_Physics@sh.itjust.works 21 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Where are they finding this love for Israel? Like, I haven't seen anything but hate for Israel, zionism, and the Palestinian genocide. The bots that try to counter this narrative get nowhere, or get removed... I don't even seen the conservative c/ praising Israel.

[–] cows_are_underrated@feddit.org 2 points 6 hours ago

Thought the same. Usually its people calling for the destruction of Israel and wanting to commit ethnic cleansing in Israel, but I couldn't remember seeing someone massively support Israel.

[–] QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works 13 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

None of this reflects my experience here. Are they visiting lemmy?

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

yeah where the fuck is any mention of gaza being terrorists? I've seen nothing but overwhelming support for Palestine and complete disdain for Israel here.

[–] QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 hours ago

Exactly, at this point support for Israel is uncommon as I would expect from a site that is not filled with bots.

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 38 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Lemmy world is defederated from hexbear, so this user has gone out of their way to use an alt to view posts from there. That's their problem.

The whole Israel tangent is bullshit anyway, I always see posts and comments critical of Israel for genocide across pretty much every instance.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 23 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

The liberal strawman they have constructed defends Israel. And remember, much like the right, "liberal" is the most scathing insult they have. They genuinely can't fathom anyone being leftist and not a tankie.

[–] QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works 10 points 19 hours ago

They genuinely believe liberal is an insult rather than an ideology that they disagree with which is kind of weird.

[–] raltoid@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I mean, they mostly just made things up.

[–] breecher@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So bizarre that they start off with whining about Trump and Musk being criticised. One should have thought that that would be something a true communist could agree with.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 9 points 22 hours ago

They love both Trump and Musk

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 71 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"Any rebuttal is shut down by these drones." Proceeds to complain that their whataboutism isn't respected as a valid "rebuttal".

[–] Cheradenine@sh.itjust.works 55 points 1 day ago

I liked that bit, anytime I use whataboutism, I get called out for whataboutism

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Absolutely unhinged and measurably false. Sure the second highest upvoted post over the last 12 hours is about genocide in Gaza.

I guess my Tianenmen onion ruffled some jimmies lol.

I really find it hard to understand how people get into this twisted mindset.

Edit: just reading the thread. Yikes.

[–] match@pawb.social 14 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

| > anniversary of tiananmen square massacre

| > everyone's posting about tiananmen square!

[–] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 4 points 12 hours ago

I believe you're referring to the impromptu, unannounced, Tiananmen Square Tank Parade...

/s

[–] plumbercraic@lemmy.sdf.org 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think feathers are ruffled but jimmies are rustled?

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

I think you might be right!

"Lemmy is more right wing than Reddit" — someone that hasn't browsed a country subreddit in years.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

and commenting on an account in a instance, that justs the same side of the coin as right wingers. yes i know they "are ultra left or whatever that means" but they use alot of the same talking points as right wingers.

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

That's because they're Stalinists, and Stalinism is fascism cosplaying as communism.

[–] Rose@lemmy.zip 34 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"whataboutism is effective propaganda". No, it's a reminder to address the actual argument, not talk about America lynching negroes.

[–] billiam0202@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago

“whataboutism is effective propaganda”

I mean, it kinda makes sense for a tankie to be pushing Russian distraction techniques?

[–] Ilovethebomb@lemm.ee 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Oh, they're mad as hell their echo chamber has lost its echo.

Also, our parliament has rules for a reason, and deliberately disrupting proceedings is a big deal for a very good reason. You break the rules, you get suspended.

[–] barsoap@lemm.ee 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Eh there's a difference giving the usual ritual slap on the wrist for a ritual stunt, as is done when parliamentarians hold up signs, come in with t-shirts with political slogans, or whatever, and suspending parliamentarians for unprecedented amounts of time on top of that timed such that they will miss the budget vote.

As such, broken clocks being right twice a day the tankie got it right in this instance, OTOH, if you look at the actual thread the comments they mention got their deserved pushback and (depending on level of ignorance of the poster) downvotes.

Apparently previous NZ precedent includes no suspension for driving a truck into parliament? Some Kiwi send me a link I want to see that.

yes, because they got defederated and cant"troll" on general lemmy instances, much like how conservatives in thier isolated echo chambers whine about the same thing.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

looks who in denial, when they called tianamen square AI slop. its odd to me they are anti-israeli, yet support governments that would be supporting genocide.

[–] Estiar@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

The pictures literally date back to then. That's so much denial.

[–] Pudutr0n@feddit.cl 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A bar. Why the long face..?

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] TheFrirish@jlai.lu 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I can imagine how the devs must be seething at the fact that the app they made, and let's be honest here, for the sole purpose of spreading propaganda, is slipping away from them.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 2 points 12 hours ago

That was one of their biggest reasons for bringing in Hexbear

[–] muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

When u build a free decentralised platform u get real freedom. Lemmy has always been the true embodiment of the marketplace of ideas. They are only now realising it.

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's a stretch. There will always be overzealous mods who ban you for things you say on other instances. Personally I think they're doing me a favor.

[–] psud@aussie.zone 6 points 1 day ago

Freedom includes running away from people that day things you don't like. Then blocking or banning you from an instance you don't care about is them running away
