a.k.a. how to own a social media platform without having to buy it.

Art of the deal.

[–] ABetterTomorrow@lemm.ee 1 points 1 hour ago

Going for a half win because that’s all he can do

Y'all, I just got my replacement tooth, so I'm finally off my mechanical diet, and I've been waiting months to eat some hard shell TACOS! Some SPICY CHICKEN TACOS!

How is he being blackmailed by TWO superpowers? China and Russia both have his balls.

What a loser.

[–] torrentialgrain@lemm.ee 70 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

The far right is using TikTok to reach young demographics. Banning it directly contradicts his interests.

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, all of the “vibes are off” jokes aside, TikTok is drastically different after the ban was lifted. I have gotten straight up racist and fascist propaganda on my fyp, and there are a lot of sympathetic comments on those videos. But I never got those videos before, because my algorithm was automatically filtering them out. It’s almost as if the app has been programmed to bypass the algorithm and occasionally show alt-right talking points to everyone, just in the hopes of casting as wide a net as possible.

[–] Dead_or_Alive@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

I’ve had that experience on all social media platforms. Sometimes just straight up hard right propaganda will appear on my feed and I have to block it again and again.

How is he being blackmailed by TWO superpowers?

It's hardly blackmail. He's benefited immensely from the right wing turn on TikTok. They've got a Sword of Damacles over their heads that can drop any time the site turns against him.

He's extorting them.

[–] einlander@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago

Maybe he likes cbt.

The legal basis is "Trump gets to do whatever the fuck he wants because none of the checks and balances have any balls to check and balance this motherfucker."

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 16 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

none of the checks and balances have any balls

Trump took full control of the DHS and the FBI, staffed it with loyal goons, and is actively arresting/assaulting anyone who stands in his way.

This isn't a matter of "no balls", its a matter of Biden handing Trump's biggest supporters a bunch of money and guns back in 2021 and Trump telling these guys "Arrest all the Bidencrats" the moment he took office.

Dafuq is any judge or legislator supposed to do in a country when ICE can kick down your door?

They fucked up thinking they'd never lose power. Now its too late to politics their way out of the mess.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 12 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Not to promote violence, but there's a particular constitutional amendment that applies in this very specific situation

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

We've been busting through constitutional amendments with abandon. I don't think you could point to one that this administration would honor or respect.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

By that logic, you'd think trump would be a slave.

He IS a 34x convicted criminal after all.

[–] Anti_Iridium@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

By that logic

Whoa, keep your thinking to our dear leader

[–] MrTrono@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

The thing is the statute of limitations extends beyond Trump's presidency and the penalties are levied against the hosting and distributing companies (Oracle, Google, Apple) wouldn't it be lovely if the next president assuming we get a next president enforced the law and collected the fines from these companies.

[–] burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, sort of, yes, but also no? It's another tool of power for a tyrannical government to wield, even if it is against companies I dislike.

[–] MrTrono@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Is it tyrannical to make companies obey laws they don't agree with? I mean it's probably tyrannical for the law to exist in the first place but this feels like a "well well well if it isn't the consequences of my own actions" for these companies propping up establishment candidates who line up be cucked by Israel.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Haven't judges been knocking down a bunch of his proclamations? It's not bulletproof, and it hasn't been everything, but clearly some things are a bridge too far. At least for now.

[–] ceiphas@feddit.org 2 points 6 hours ago

And he and bis goons ignore the judges

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 19 points 16 hours ago

TACO deadlines are highly flexible.

[–] kokesh@lemmy.world 13 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

🌮 🌮 🌮 I guess there is no legal basis anyway for banning video upload app, just because it is Chinese. Trump is an idiot. And 🐔

[–] Zak@lemmy.world 14 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

There is a legal basis: congress passed a law, the president at the time signed it, TikTok sued, and the Supreme Court unanimously ruled against TikTok. That's a legal basis by definition.

Perhaps you mean that there is no rational basis. That's a reasonable position you can argue for.

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 2 points 16 hours ago

In this case, someone would have to sue or otherwise intervene. But that action is radically unpopular. Nobody wants to be that guy.

[–] ech@lemm.ee 1 points 13 hours ago

This isn't TACO, it's graft.

[–] Sibshops@lemmy.myserv.one 1 points 16 hours ago

There is a legal basis. US can ban Russian Times paper, too.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 12 points 16 hours ago

"There is no legal basis" describes everything this administration does.

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 8 points 16 hours ago

Is anyone going to stop him? No? Then he can extend it as many times as he wants.

[–] Buske@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

PatrickStar.meme - "Is Money a legal basis?"

[–] WhatsHerBucket@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago

Tiny Taco Hands makes up the rules as he goes along. He can extend as many times as he wants, who is going to stop him?

[–] roguetrick@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

The legal basis is someone with standing would have to sue him over it. Tiktokm certainly isn't going to and Congress... Well.

[–] kkj@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 minutes ago

Maybe Elmo could, now that they broke up. He could argue that TikTok existing makes Twitter's videos less popular.
