“The facts are she is in our country illegally. She overstayed her visa and has had a final order by an immigration judge for over a decade."

Yeah. And that "final order" was that she could stay as long as she followed all the conditions set out by the judge. Which she did.

These paragraphs are in this order. I'm noticing a ton of repetition of details in news articles lately, like they aren't even bothering with editors anymore.

Shaikh said Sakeik was just 8 years old when her family arrived in the U.S. on a visa. Although their asylum request was denied, her lack of citizenship meant the government couldn’t deport them. Instead, they were placed under an order of supervision and required to check in with immigration authorities once a year.

Sakeik was just 8 when her family arrived in America on a visa, her husband told the outlet.

I think the reason is exactly what you think the reason is.

This feels like a novice writer trying to create a story out of a 30 second video clip, but ended up writing a transcript of the video clip. The repetitive paragraphs reads like the video clip jumping from scene to scene.

It reads like AI to me. Wouldn't be surprised to find out it is

My wife wants to go to the Philippines and I'm scared shitless she'll be barred reentry. She thinks there's zero issue as she's legal and her friends have managed to make the trip lately.

She thinks there’s zero issue as she’s legal

Holy shit

I would really try to make her understand what's been happening. Being legal doesn't mean a goddamned thing. I don't know how important this trip is, but I would not do it unless someone's dying.

The risk might be small at the end of the day, but the downside, if they randomly pick you to fuck up that day, is basically infinite.

Tell her that not only will that not help her, and that they've already deported legal immigrants, but that they're also doing everything in their power to invalidate visas.

They say they only want to deport illegal immigrants but they're lying, they want to deport all immigrants.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

They're not lying they just consider all immigrants illegal and brown ones moreso. It's a nativist movement in the US yet again and it makes just as much sense as it did in 1780.

They're not lying they just consider all immigrants illegal

But they are lying, because they're not illegal.

Classic Comparative optimism bias. 'this only happens to other people"

"Conservatives" really do have a kink for getting cucked by their own government.

[–] LilB0kChoy@midwest.social 7 points 1 month ago

Did you see somewhere that Taahir Shaikh was "conservative"? I read the article and didn't see it mentioned. Just because they're from Texas doesn't mean they're automatically conservative.

Defend your self and you end up full of holes. Don't and you looose your loved ones. So which is it?
