Women only trans inclusive This is an inclusive community for all things women. Whether you're here for make up tips, feminism or just friendly chit chat, we've got you covered.

Rules…

  1. Women only… trans women are women, and transphobic or gender critical talk isn’t allowed. Anyone under the trans umbrella (e.g. non-binary, bigender, agender) is free to decide whether a women's community is a good fit for them.
  2. Don’t be a dick. No personal attacks, no aggression, play nice.
  3. Don’t hate on groups, hatefilled talk about groups is not allowed. Ever.
  4. No governmental politics, so no talk of Trump actions etc. We recommend Feminism@beehaw.org for that, but here is an escape from it.
  5. New accounts or users with few comments may have their posts removed to prevent spam and bad-faith participation.

The older ones are pretty problematic. Beauty and the Beast is about Stockholm syndrome. The Little Mermaid is about a woman giving up everything just for a chance with a man. Sleeping Beauty couldn't consent! They're all pretty messy... I love them but they're not great.

I feel like these are very surface level readings of those movies. I agree with this writer that Stockholm syndrome isn't an accurate interpretation of the relationship we see unfold in Beauty and the Beast. And The Little Mermaid works really well as a metaphor for being transgender.

I don’t disagree with the main point of the article, but this is kind of a funny way of putting things:

Belle’s reason for staying: Belle made an agreement with the Beast in order to save her father. She is not obeying for the sake of her own survival and she does not obey any of his other requests.

Sure, she’s not obeying under the threat of her own death, just the (edit, I remembered more about the movie: probable) death of her father, the only person in her whole town who is kind to her. That’s not a very meaningful distinction in my opinion.

The Little Mermaid

In the real story she almost murders the prince for marrying someone else but commits suicide instead.

And there's no Jamaican crabs in Denmark.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 6 points 6 days ago

There's no talking crabs anywhere in the world.

That's a really interesting read thanks 😊

That's an interesting take thanks okok

I watched Cinderella a lot with my kid and she is a strongest female character like ever. Mom dies, pop dies, gets bullied by her stepmom and stepsisters, still doesn't bitch and loose hope. She works hard, is good to everyone, and wants to go to a ball. She is super tough, never looses temper, always kind, does the right thing. She is more tough than Sarah Connor. Snow white also. Works for bed and breakfast at the dwarfs, she's no freeloader. Still nicest person around.

That's a great take on it!

Tbh the only Disney Princesses I cared about growing up were Mulan, Pocahontas and Esmeralda. Maybe Jasmine. I just couldn't really bring myself to care for the others.

The evil queen in Snow White was much cooler than Snow White. The scene when she is brewing the potion is what I imagined in my head it looked like when I threw random leaves and berries in my bucket in the garden.

The Evil Queen really is an icon

I like Disney movies - and I like that they have evolved a bit with the times. Frozen wasn't perfect, but a huge step up from Beauty and the Beast (from a feminism pov). I just saw the Lilo and Stitch live action movie and really liked it.

[–] Greercase@lemmus.org 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I didn't personally see the live action lilo and stitch, but I watched a few people talk about it. It seems like a lot of people are disappointed that they changed a lot of the themes of the movie. I know families can look different, but do you you have any thoughts about how the change affected your enjoyment? I only personally know two people that saw it and the consensus seemed to be that it was a letdown.

Here's an example of the general criticism I've seen: https://youtu.be/vfFGEFUFaHQ

I do snt see the animated one, so I don't have a frame of reference. As a standalone it was good.

[–] Greercase@lemmus.org 2 points 4 days ago

Oh, that makes sense. Thank you for the response!

[–] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I've steered clear of the live actions, I'm all about the cartoon. Are the lives worth a watch?

[–] sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Lilo and Stitch is... Not sure if I would say the same of the others.

Some of the more modern ones are better. Though back in the day we feel the Swan Princess was really the only strong one.

Edit: Coincidentally non-disney, heh.

[–] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I don't think I've seen that one. No idea what it's about

[–] oftheair@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Oh, it is wonderful! Would you like a video about it (with spoilers)?

[–] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Thanks I've got disney so I may end watching it.

[–] oftheair@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

We don't think it was Disney actually, it was "[distributed by] New Line Cinema in the United States and by Columbia TriStar Film Distributors International outside the US." -Wikipedia.

Its production companies again according to Wikipedia were: Nest Entertainment and Rich Animation Studios.

It might be on Disney nowadays, but we wouldn't necessarily count on it.

Edit: Apologies for accidentily misleading you that wasn't our intent. 😅

[–] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You're right! I just googled. I'll put it on my list thanks

[–] flicker@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The Swan Princess was "my" princess, and I still sing the songs sometimes to myself. It's way better than any of the others we had at the time.

Disney anything was never really a huge part of my life, honestly. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. It was just something that crossed my path every so often, maybe kept me mildly entertained for a bit, and then I moved on.

I’ll tell ya how I feel about The Princess and the Pauper…
