He was never a fucking environmental hero. He saw an opportunity to make money and took it.

[-] BolexForSoup@kbin.social 25 points 11 months ago

He had a good PR team and didn’t use Twitter

[-] jol@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 11 months ago

He literally foiled government plans to create high speed rail in America. In favor of building tunnels for more cars. How can anyone think for a second he's any kind of hero?

[-] ohlaph@lemmy.world 71 points 11 months ago

He has fought against mass transit in favor of electric cars. He's not the environmentalist he claims to be.

[-] JoBo@feddit.uk 8 points 11 months ago

And Tesla is only profitable because it sells its carbon credits to ICE car manufacturers. Whole thing is a scam.

[-] ssboomman@lemm.ee 50 points 11 months ago

Stop saying Elon has done anything positive, he has not

[-] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee 49 points 11 months ago

How tf was he a hero?

EVs are a step in the right direction but everything from production to charging relies on fossil fuels. He doesn’t even build them that well.

[-] vind@lemmy.world 24 points 11 months ago

He was a hero in the way that most people who didn't know him used his propaganda to assume he's one of the people who properly aimed for change to improve our world.

[-] ChihuahuaOfDoom@lemmy.world 40 points 11 months ago

I'm pretty sure he's whatever will make him the most money.

[-] takeda@lemmy.world 16 points 11 months ago

Yes, he just fooled a lot of us. His only achievement in being "an environmental hero" was investing early in Tesla Motors. That company showed that an EV can look cool and be practical.

Everything else he does, including some things Tesla does say the opposite.

[-] Supervivens@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

I’d argue their biggest achievement is the nationwide charging network that actually lets long distance driving possible with an EV (as all other options still suck)

[-] Endorkend@kbin.social 35 points 11 months ago

He's a narcissist, he tells the audience that is most convenient to his current goals whatever the fuck they want to hear.

[-] qwertyWarlord@lemmy.world 34 points 11 months ago

It's absolutely mind boggling how his early image still defines him to most people. His supporters are at Trump levels of copium

[-] neanderthal@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

I used to be a fan in Tesla's and Space X's early days. Then he built the stupid Vegas tunnel subway. And launched a car in orbit. And got in the way during that cave fiasco. And the self driving fiascos. Anyone that still thinks the dude has all his marbles is willfully ignorant or hasn't been paying attention.

[-] wuphysics87@lemmy.ml 28 points 11 months ago

Who cares? Dude is a fucking nazi

[-] silence7@slrpnk.net 8 points 11 months ago

He became an open Nazi over the past few years. It's a big shift, and I got a lot of pushback on Reddit when I began pointing out his dog whistles.

[-] AEMarling@slrpnk.net 2 points 11 months ago

No lies detected.

[-] WaxedWookie@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

He's in it for himself (mostly whatever will get him praise to stroke his pathetically fragile ego). Any benefit to the climate is an unintended bonus.

The left have standards and principles, so he'll continue to push right for praise - he's already xitting in agreement with the Jewish question, so at this point, I think he's already past the point of no return.

[-] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 6 points 11 months ago

And then on Saturday he dumped so much methane into the sky that it showed up on weather radar.

[-] guriinii@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

He's also reiterating Zionist nonsense.

[-] obinice@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Haha, what gullible idiot ever thought Musk was an "environmental hero"? 😂

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

He's the rare right wing, climate change accepting.

[-] Deceptichum@kbin.social 10 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

He’s views on it are softening.

In 2018 he though it was the biggest threat, now he thinks population decline is. He’s also retweeted false claims such as farming has no effect, etc.

Honestly I think Elons climate concerns ends where his commercial ventures do. For him going green means batteries, cars, and clean energy to power those, not reducing consumerism/triples R’s or other sustainability.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

I can't see inside his brain but I think he's referring to biological things. The problem is people are looking up farming which includes all the CO2 from gas, diesel, and probably even ng from fertilizer production. They aren't the same things.

As for his other things like being against public transit his privilege shows through.

[-] Deceptichum@kbin.social 1 points 11 months ago

Which would still be wrong.

Methane as a byproduct of ruminates makes up roughly half of the 20% of CO2e emissions created by the agricultural industry.

[-] Telorand@reddthat.com 2 points 11 months ago

"Yeah, climate change is real, but I'll be real dead by the time it affects human survival, so IDGAF."

[-] sour@kbin.social 1 points 11 months ago

climate change is real but not caused by human activities

Letting my Guardian subscription expire was the best thing I did in the year of 2022.

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
