It’s literally the point of the endgame in monopoly

Wait this is actually real? I thought it was a hilarious sbubby but instead it's just a depressing slap in the face...

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

This was a gift for my dad who is an avid collector. His generation is so judgemental of us so this was perfect. So perfect in fact that my step sister gave it to him for Christmas too, which meant we got to open and play one of them. It was very satisfying to watch that old man come in last place at being a millennial! I asked him if a participation trophy would make him feel better. 🤣

ha ha ha - you sure showed him 🥲

It fun once or twice but still Monopoly, Hasbro couldn't commit to the bit so ithe rules are barely altered. If you're expecting a player is the Asset Manager, who slowly buys all the property and jacks up rent of the whole board, you're going to be disappointed.

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Or just run around the board, tracking your laps. Every lap, shit gets more expensive. The first player to go around the board 5 times without going bankrupt or drawing a "you died" chance card wins.

Other chance cards could include "you survived the round of layoffs, but productivity goals remain the same. Lose $50 buying coffee to keep up." Or "Take a mental health day. Gain $20 since you didn't spend it commuting." Or "Sunday brunch with friends. Lose $30 on avocado toast and mimosas."

Community chest cards can all be like $5 of help and specifically point out that social safety nets have been all but dismantled. Some can be dropping like $100 on you, but at the cost of your next turn because you spent all day on the phone and/or doing tedious paperwork to maximize assistance.

Somebody take these ideas and just make a new board game called Peasants or Surviving Capitalism or Proletarians or something. If you make a ton of money off of it, just throw me 1%. If you only make a little money, just throw me a free copy.

Not for sale to persons under the age of 16. By placing an order for this product, you declare that you are 16 years of age or over. This item must be used responsibly and appropriately.

Even the disclaimer implies we’re irresponsible. That’s a weird age limit, too.

Probably an attempt to avoid repeating the mistake and letting gen alpha see how easy millennials and gen z have it compared to what they'll have. Gen alpha monopoly will probably involve watching ads to stay in the game because they don't have any money in the first place.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Shit, you're right. I bet all the properties will have a corporate sponsor. Like, "McDonald's™ on Ventnor Avenue" or "Walmart™ of Baltic Avenue" (because let's be real, Baltic Avenue would totally have a Walmart.) Companies would go into bidding wars to get put on Boardwalk or Park Place.

[–] capuccino@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I'm reading the instructions manual and I'm losing my mind

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 27 points 1 month ago (2 children)

There is a “Monopoly for Millennials”.

No houses, you don’t buy real estate, just collect “experiences.”

[–] llii@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 month ago

Oh wow. I mean I guess it's in the original spirit of the game, but still wtf.

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 month ago

This is honestly hilarious. Props for them for actually going there.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You pull a chance card " The company you work for has posted record profits this financial year, you get laid off, deduct 5000 dollars from your emergency savings fund"

You flip the board because you've never had savings

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Might as well flip the board, because the bank’s gonna charge you for an overdraft if you don’t.

There's an overdraft protection limit we put in place! Oh wait, the pubs forced that not to happen as well.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 4 weeks ago

Hey we heard you're out of money so we gave you a free loan without asking you and we're going to bill you for it.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 1 month ago
[–] thevoidzero@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean just make a player join the game after halfway through the game, it'll pretty much work that way. If you need more, add them a bit later.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

Boomers start 20 turns early and the houses are 50% off during those turns.

They also get relaxed zoning and don't have to play by the monopoly house rules for their first 20 turns.

[–] The_v@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

50%...

Quick math - minus inflation, I am getting around 90% off.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 weeks ago

I also forgot that they get to play with the relaxed zoning rules where they can throw a house up without having the monopoly for it.

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 month ago

It really is Monopoly; you simply have to start one to two hours after the game began—just like millennials in real life.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You joke but that's how original Monopoly was. A socialist lady made it as an anticapitalist game and parkers Bros stole it and changed it to pro capitalism because she didn't maintain rights.

[–] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 5 points 4 weeks ago

AFAIK Darrow played it, liked the game and then plagiarised it. Parker did buy the rights from Magie after the fact.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Landlord's_Game

After reading that, I'm more confused than ever.

Anti-Monopoly is a variation that maintains the competition good, monopoly bad theme.

[–] neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's how the game is supposed to work. It's the point of it.

It was made during the first gilded age when wealth inequality was at its highest levels (until now), and was literally an example of how capitalism is bad and prices people out of even being able to afford a cheap place to rent, and when they can't pay rent, they go to jail.

It is not a happy game, and to this day I don't understand why people assume it's a happy go lucky kids game (at least that was the impression I was given when I was introduced to the game)

[–] timeghost@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Boomers loved it because there was still property left to scoop up. Now we are literally playing a full board after some boomer bankrupted all the other players and bought everything.

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago

Agreed, but it's not "some boomer", it's giant corporations. Sure, some boomers are profiting handsomely off their rentals/lake houses/AirBNBs/etc. But that individual greed will never match the boards of directors full of the same types of people, all enriching themselves on a giant scale by profiteering off our need to have shelter.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Imagine being guaranteed to buy a house. Or being guaranteed to get married. Or being guaranteed to retire…

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 8 points 1 month ago

That's just Monopoly after 3 rounds or smth

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 month ago

Pass Go, collect 200 exposure

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And I thought the original Monopoly was boring ...

[–] grue@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Monopoly is intended to be infuriating, not boring. If it's boring, you're probably messing it up with house rules or something.

[–] DeusUmbra@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Already exists, along with Feminist Monopoly (It's just monopoly but female players get extra money when they pass Go), Cheaters Monopoly (Again, just monopoly but with cheating being allowed, but if you get caught you have to put on handcuffs.), and many other Really stupid Monopoly ideas, like Monopoly Go: The Mobile Game: The Board Game. Just look up KamSandwich on Youtube, he's got a lot of videos about weird Monopoly versions, like Fortnite Monopoly which doesn't even play like Monopoly at all.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Does that person have a video on The Landlord's Game (the "version of monopoly" that actually matters and that people need to know about)?

[–] Nelots@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

Feminist Monopoly (It's just monopoly but female players get extra money when they pass Go)

I can't imagine this one sold well. Who's the target audience? The only people who would find this funny likely don't actually have female friends.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

tbf isn't becoming a landlord a fate worse than death?

[–] Alaik@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

It should be the same outcome.

[–] grepe@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

the only way you get money is by randomly scattered gigs in between... you got a tip on your uber eats delivery! treat yourself to a breakfast.

[–] _AutumnMoon_@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago

I think this exists
