It's good, but the original books (The Short-timers and The Phantom Blooper) are A LOT better. They are also way more radical than the movie was allowed to be, especially the second book, about a third of which centers on acutal Vietnamese people and their struggle for freedom.
A friend told me that it's a strange war movie in the sense that the initial boot camp sequence is better than the latter "actually in a war zone" part. (Fun fact: Kubrick hated traveling so much that he didn't want to go to Vietnam to film the Vietnam parts of this movie, so they were filmed in eastern London with some palm trees flown in. I'm guessing eastern London in the 80s looked enough like a war-torn Vietnamese city). But that's not to say to latter part of the movie is bad, it's just different though it's been a while since I've last seen this film so I can't really describe it that well right now. In any case, it's made by Kubrick and I feel as such stands shoulder to shoulder with his other acclaimed works.
Second half of the movie is pointless. They should’ve ended it after Pyle shot himself. The rest of it is just a recruitment film, like if “Johnny Got His Gun” just turned into a regular war novel part way through.
I wish Pyle escaped and never been seen again than offing himself tbh.
I would read fanfiction of private Pyle on the lam, just saying.
I liked it. I haven't seen it since becoming full blown communist. But I loved that it didn't shirk at all about showing the US as the blood sucking empire that it is. You have mindless murder for the sake of it. Needless cruelty. And a principled communist woman who would rather die than be a part of it.
I really loved the movie as a kid. I dont think its an easy watch today. The music was great.
I'm interested as well. Wanna know if it's good or overrated.
I remember thinking it was kinda mid when I watched it but that was a long time ago.
