LOL no! He took the front and rear storage covers off. That's it! I have a kayak just like that.

Having had a nervous Jack Russel on the tip of my kayak, I'm a little gun shy about porting dogs around but those two look to be easily trainable.

Great pic and solidly "aww", but let's not make shit up.

I have a similar one from the same company, but they seem to have gone out of business.

Awwww, but in the kind of sad way. Our guy passed away just last week in Vermont, but the picture is real. Sounds like he was a neat person.

Thanks for the background! May he rest in peace. It sounds like he had a very interesting and fulfilling life.

Looks like we slash-dotted it, offline.

Looks like it’s back up, but the TL;DR is pediatric orthopedic surgeon who lived in Vermont. He was a team doctor for the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL club before that. He was a pilot who rebuilt a plane from the ground up and also built kayaks. It’s unclear from the obit if he built the one in the pic or merely modified it, but it mentions the “internet famous” picture with his dogs. You never know of course, but he seemed like a decent and interesting dude who at least knew the value of hobbies.

I believe it, AI doesn't make reflections that credible

A single person kayak wants to roll over without even trying; I can't imagine staying upright in one with two hyperactive dogs in it.

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

...? How many kayaks have you been in? They are quite stable, which is why they are used both in the ocean and in whitewater.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Quite a few. I prefer canoes to kayaks.

[–] Gustephan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I like both for different purposes. I'd much rather be in a kayak if im cruising around a larger body of water like a bay or a lake, but putzing around on a slow moving river or in a swamp I much prefer canoes. Or drinking; drinking in a canoe is a good time, drinking in a kayak is a way to get dunked

When I had kayaks as a kid they were almost impossible to tip. Like, it goes back and forth a lot but it always righted itself

There's no way my (old and gone now) Labrador would ever even consider for 1 second staying in that boat. Water = swim until I physically cannot.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Labs are a mess around water! 😆 Our adopted Lab jumped in the pool minutes after letting her loose on her own. Came outside to find her swimming in circles, whimpering because she couldn't get out.

Took 2 attempts to show her the ladders. Done. Smartest dog I've ever had. Still, she jumped in and emptied our 20G plastic pond on the daily. Had to give up on that project. Damned Lab!

[–] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Oh yeah mine was smart but not about swimming! Went to the lake once and she started just swimming towards the opposite side until I literally had to swim out and go rescue her lol. Best dog I ever had though, they're so full of love.

My dog would be shaking by anxiety. Aquatic adventure would be more of a horror trip to her

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Kinda hate I had to check this wasn't AI generated, but there's enough out there that I'm fairly convinced it's real

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Have a similar kayak. He just took the covers off and trained his dogs a bit. Looks like great fun!

Shutout to the LouisWildlife YouTube channel if you want more content like this.... Louis is a Maine Coon cat in Germany who loves to ride in his peopleservant's canoe. It's very peaceful, one of the things I play on the TV while doing chores.

As god intended

[–] Illogicalbit@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I know there’s a retriever joke in there somewhere…

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The fact that they say that he adopted these dogs implies that they might not have been adopted. Like, he biologically fathered two golden retrievers. Furries rejoice?

This post bleached my soul. I smiled so hard :>
