It's not even that, it's because they were afraid.

Apparently, humanity is prone to recurrent outbreaks of paranoia. When your entire community is afraid of something, shit is bad and bad things are gonna happen.

In Finland half the killed witches were men iirc. People were afraid and paranoid about witchcraft
