Meta is not your friend, despite how addicted to it everyone is

[–] Ileftreddit@lemmy.world 9 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

In fact, it seems like all Info and Tech companies really hopped in line with Trump like fucking right away and I’m worried that not even that critical mass of 3-4% of the country is even able to protest, much less if that many people even want to

Companies don't have morals, if Trump disappeared tomorrow and was replaced with Bernie Sanders or whatever they would swap right back.

Did you all forget Insta is just Facebook for people under 65?

Same parent company. Same priorities. The same people pushing AI gen antarctic ice wall and horse dewormer content on your memaw are deciding what you see too.

Meta is actively pursuing government contracts for uses of its supercomputer it's putting online next year and it's AI investments. They are becoming a defense contractor essentially. To acquire contracts during this regime, I'm sure they will give any backdoor and facial recognition assistance the Pentagon asks for.

Being redundant to say this. People are actively posting pictures of themselves, their families, and their locations continuously and sending them to a government defense contractor. Posting their activities, hobbies, who they interact with, their food, et cetera.

If news companies cared about people's privacy, they would be broadcasting that on every network warning the population in my opinion. But that would piss off the U.S. government, and they don't want that.

Funny how such glitches never happen to nazi posts.

Something interesting to me is how the left takes these things on the chin. In these comments there are lots of comments like "yea well they all do this". Compare that to the right during covid who would take screenshots and make sure everybody knew this was happening and not only that it was happening but how this would lead to dystopian authoritarian rule that threaten each and every person. I see this over and over again with each and every opportunity to show people how bad things are getting. But instead we snuff out these things ourselves and just move along.

The left have no bite. They are all bark

Can we make this character be the face of leftists from now on. Because its most of you.

The dichotomy between the left and right on these kind of issues are probably more economic than anything else.

The people I know that freaked out about these sort of things were typically maga types. Lower income, lower education, and relied on social media for all kinds of news, human contact, and such.

Meanwhile most liberals and conservatives that didn’t, lived more comfortably with higher career and education levels. This isn’t even really a left wing vs right wing kind of thing. Even the conservatives I knew that had higher education and career accomplishment freaked less out about Covid and social media “censorship” too because they could just do without.

If you can live comfortably and it doesn’t affect your living, you tend to not rock the boat

Yes, clearly the handful of people with no power that advocate for Socialism or Communism are what is wrong with our country now.

I think you are confused and are perhaps really wondering why centrists keep getting moved to the right.

Both dominate political parties in the US are fascist in nature. You have the authoritarian fascists and you have the neolib fascists.

Picking on the left is just a convenient scapegoat at this point. It is low hanging fruit and is pretty pointless.

Be more specific. Do you mean how sites were taking down covid conspiracies that were getting people killed?

Also, these sites aren't free speech platforms. They're advertisement platforms. They should be burnt to the ground.

They were getting whipped up and manipulated. A lot of that shit you are talking about was not organic. A lot of the shit you are talking about was pure paranoid mass delusion. A moral panic just like a classic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penis_panic. It's a feature of the left that such things DON'T spread the same way.

They censor everything, also pro abortion posts get removed

[–] icystar@lemmy.cif.su 23 points 21 hours ago

All platforms are just becoming censorship hellholes for the owners.

One more reason the leave this digital sh*thole - if empathy is going to be restricted, it is simply not wanted on these platforms... 😔

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

Why not work with each other to find ways to get around these things and overwhelm the platform. Like remember when people found that AI put guardrails in. People were not on these comments saying "well guys we should pack it up and leave it alone, I don't like it anyways. No, instead the collective effort to get it to say something mean was incredible. So why is it with this stuff we convince each other to leave and let these platforms be run by the right wing people. You ever ask why there's a difference?

[–] oliver@lemmy.pifferi.io 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

There ARE alternatives already and lots of great people are working on these platforms - but as long as everyone stays there „just because of…“, things won‘t change even with these options.

If great things are cloaked under a warning or a NSFW-label for no real reason, it‘s of course up to everyone to choose a different path - but this means losing followers etc. pp. - and embarking on a new platform.

So yes, we can overwhelm this platform - but do people really want this? I‘m not sure. 🤷🏼‍♂️

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

So how do you promote the new platforms if we all left?

Nobody on the right stops to ask if people want them. I mean Reddit was pretty left leaning. Now it isn't. So what does it matter if they want you there.

It takes 10% of a group to change the views of 100% of the group. The right knew this and strategically targeted smaller sub Reddit's before moving to bigger ones. I called this out in 2015. You could see smaller local subs shift. Then those fed into the larger city ones and then eventually the larger ones like r/Canada saw big shifts. They did this everywhere. The left has never understood this tactic I don't know why. It was so obvious from the start.

Yeah, everyone should stop using Instagram, Facebook, threads, reddit, tik tok. But the FOMO is too strong. It's too bad, if they did it would fix most of their problems in like a week.
