Why is too big or too small a problem?

Small instances can be less stable. Large instances aren't a problem themselves, but if new users always join the largest instance, that defeats the purpose of decentralization.
I prefer piefed.zip to be future proof, we've seen how reluctant people are to migrate once they are settled
Anarchist.nexus doesn't have open signups yet
I'm curious about Piefed: can anybody tell me what the main differences / pros / cons are with Lemmy?
summary here: https://join.piefed.social/features/
Ooh man, this is what put Piefed on my radar, as I have to move two communities away from a failing Lemmy instance and there's no way to do that in Lemmy. I think I'm gonna give Piefed a serious spin soon.
yea that's a cool feature
It could use some work though. Subscribers are not ported and there are many nuances with post/comment porting.
Better than nothing though.
If you consider how subscribing actually works (or rather: has to work) with federated content, this isn't surprising. There could be some mechanism that uses the old community and some sort of meta-post to trigger the subscriptions to migrate, but the hard part is making that abuse-resistant. Probably too hard?
I know that Rimu does want to make it so subscribers from a community migrating are transferred. But I imagine this would only work for users based on piefed instances.
One possible method to limit abuse would be manual approval from both instances.
The Piefed community migration requires a manual request that needs to be approved.
From my discussions with the world admins, they can actually move subscribers between LW and piefed.world (but unlike piefed.social, they won't move posts/comments).
Better than nothing though.
Definitely
Perfect. Thanks!
Considering it's still early days and Piefed has a mere 1.5K MAUs, you might as well go with pieces.social unless we are talking about Canada.
Don't put the cart before the horse so to speak.
P.S. I actively use Piefed, but I need this account for managing a Lemmy community.
I feel like the same was said about lemmy.world at some time, but once the ball gets rolling it's way harder to stop it
True, but with community migration tools built into piefed it is less of an issue long-term.
There is some truth to that, but IMO centralisation with LW isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I think its only 35% of Threadiverse MAUs.
Not to mention there are technical reasons for the promince of LW; the inability to cleanly move a community (subscribers, posts, comments) between instances.
I think the Lemmy software UX inadvertently over-promotes local communities over remote communities. I'm not sure if it's due to the communities page filtering by local by default, or the fact that local communities have shorter display names? Do they take priority in autocomplete?
I've been meaning to make some comparisons with numbers of posts, comments, and active users for communities that are on lemmy.world with another identical community on another instance.
I haven't used PieFed much so IDK if it's similar there.
But also using the developer's own instance brings a different risk of putting all your eggs in the same basket, look at what happened to Kbin.

Well, to be fair, if rimu just went AWOL - it wouldn't matter what piefed instance everyone went to. The development process would stop and Piefed would degrade.
Kbin forked to Mbin and some of the instances upgraded
Piefed.social apparently has banned Pepe the Frog so probably not that as I can't imagine that goes down well with a lot of redditors.
What's the reason for that
Some alt right idiots were making Pepe memes on 4chan ten years ago so apparently that means we have to let the fascists have him.
Ohh same old trope for censorship
Yeah I don't agree with it but what can you do.
social so they can get the feel of "reddit" without having to deal with thier OVERMODERATION. then they can move from there. although its too small, and some topics arnt as common as are on reddit.
I chose ~~piefed.online~~ feddit.online over the .zip since their instance has been around longer and uses the stable release
feddit.online, you mean? It doesn't seem like piefed.online exists.
Yeah, I confused names 😅
