Here is my two cents on that question

When I fill out a sponsorblock,
I feel like I have comitted an act of civic duty
I feel pride

I hope others feel that too

I want to ***** on the grave of Ivy Lee and Edward Bernays and sponsorblock lets me symbolically do it.

We are participants in an hyperwar and I hope our side win.

Fellow sponsorblocker,
I don't know who you are,
I don't know where you are
But can I see you and I am proud of you
Fellow sponsorblocker, I salute you O7

To stop the nasty goblins and their stooges
who constantly besiege our minds and try to infect them
##Is our solemn duty
in this digital hyperwar
To protect the innocent from their vile endeavour
to have less and want more

Definitely. I hope to live to see the eradication of ads from my life.

They don't do it anymore, but I used to really enjoy that someone used Sponsorblock to mark the Lance Stroll section in F1 post race interviews as off-topic.

[โ€“] interdimensionalmeme@lemmy.ml 1 points 13 minutes ago

That's funny we should have more tags, colours and maybe even the ability to insert comments in the timeline, even if you have to dig a little to see them in the interface. Like a comment section outside youtube, our little clubhouse

Y'all really want people to make videos for free and get no monetary reward from it, innit?

[โ€“] interdimensionalmeme@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 minutes ago

I want google youtube facebook amazon apple and the ENTIRE ADVERTISING MARKETING PUBLIC RELATION ETC. INDUSTRY to die an ignominious death.
I want NO ART WHATSOEVER nor journalism, to be advertising funded.
I want to abolish all intellectual property, all created artworks of any kinds to be the infinite freely reproducible goods that they are
I want all art, journalism to be paid in advance and reliably so the people who do it and are good at it have a respectable life and not "just the rockstar" decided by distribution executives
I want all blitzscaled and hyperscaled companies to crash and burn, they are price predator anti-competitive monopolist
I want all giant institution to be abundantly and unambiguously good for us and not just good for shareholder profit
I want all the scum trying to hack my brain with endless manipulation tactics to have their mouth filled with ash and regret
I want to stop all the peeping eyes spying on me in the showers, listening to the vibration of mems devices in my phone and infering my emotional state when I delete a selfie or menstruate
I SHIT TO STOP BEING FUCKED

Is that REALLY too much to ask ?

We know the problem and IT'S "YOU"(*) !

(*) You, the mental pattern that weeps for the ads, ads aren't free they cost us our free will, that's literally what they buy, you probably like saying "well free healthcare isn't free" yes but you know what at least with free healthcare everyone benefits from everyone else being healthy. With ads we sell our souls for more doomscroll and the only ones that benefit is private equity while the creator still gets left behind in the rat race of the tournament economy.

I'd rather pay for a service directly and have that fund the creators and those maintaining the service, without it all being used for profit of the owners (like YouTube premium). That, or have it publicly funded and enough safety nets that people don't need to worry and just make videos for fun. That's just for now, in the future we could go even further beyond that.

[โ€“] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 2 points 56 minutes ago

You mean like in the early days when people made videos for free and got no monetary reward from it?

Yes. Yes, like that.

[โ€“] can@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 hour ago

They still get paid and I wouldn't have been watching or listening to the ad read either way. This addon just makes it slightly easier than tapping the right side of the screen 5-6 times. If it takes me say 5 seconds to save the next guy the trouble I'll do it.

[โ€“] Azzu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 hour ago

No, we want everyone to not need a monetary reward anymore and just get enough to live regardless of what they choose to do with their time.

[โ€“] morgan_423@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

SB is my good friend. I love gaining my time back, and it does my heart good when I'm given the opportunity to give time back to others.

[โ€“] can@sh.itjust.works 10 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

I have submitted over 500 segments and they've been used over 250,000 times saving over 1800 hours.

That's 1800 hours of the-device-that-watched-it's electricity saved (minus whatever amount humans might have skipped manually)

Awesome ! ๐Ÿ™Œ

[โ€“] dwindling7373@feddit.it 9 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Eh, I don't mind sponsored content at least they are explicit and naturally skippable.

Unskippable stuff is the real issue imho, I don't use Sponsorblock on purpose.

[โ€“] gon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

You could use Sponsorblock and simply not skip sponsors. Use it to skip interaction reminders or intros, for example.

It's a very useful extension.

Yes, just having them clearly labelled on the seek bar is great
if you decide the product is not for you, there is a button to skip to the end of the segment manually, if you'd like to consider it first

I have a severe allergy to all paid speech and derivatives.

My only regret is that I can't disinfect it from from my internet at the router level without my very old phone having to do the heavy lifting

[โ€“] crazyminner@lemmy.ml 6 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

This thread is being a little two wholesome, who is cutting onions in here ?

[โ€“] black_flag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 7 hours ago

It is civic duty and mutual aid

It's a community of people who suggest sections of video to skip for they are paid speech and other irritant such as interaction reminders, and other indesirable things, it also includes labelling, such as tangents which some people might want to also skip.

I think it is a natural part of us wanting to reclaim our attention back.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/sponsorblock/
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/sponsorblock-for-youtube/

It's an addon and we the viewers crowdsource the labelling for the people who come after us

I don't know who ajay is but thank you ajay

[โ€“] Nemo@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 hours ago

Thanks for taking the time to explain is such detail!

[โ€“] Bademantel@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Thank you for your service ๐Ÿซก

[โ€“] itkovian@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Me too. Screw sponsors and screw advertisements.

Sometime I land on a 2 minute old video, I watch it and there's an ad segment

I report it and hit refresh, my marked segment appears but also other segments !

and then I realize, I'm not alone !
