Mine goes back very far but can hardly bend forward, didn't know it wasn't normal until my wife pointed it out.

Hers goes almost 90 degrees forward and only straight up and down going back

I guess they have to pick up whatever they can after being transported. /s

Being able to bend backwards is genetic, and at the extremes it's commonly called this:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitchhiker%27s_thumb

I haven't heard of your case where you can't bend it forward. Does it hurt or cause any discomfort if you try to move it forward (without help and also with some gentle pressure)?

You should wear gloves at work my friend, that cant be good to absorb through your skin

[โ€“] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah life of a diesel mechanic.

It's probably going to kill me eventually, but breathing in the combustion fumes is certainly worse and that's hard to avoid too

Straight up, no back bend here, and 90 degree forward at the joint near the nail, the joint near the base does not bend at all. Just genetics.

Looks just like mine

[โ€“] Cattail@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

My thumb bends towards a brighter future so only slightly

[โ€“] riquisimo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

Not like that.

Depends how hard you bend it.

[โ€“] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

Can bend anything with a press

[โ€“] Mothra@mander.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I can't do that with my thumb. Mine goes straight even if I press to force to bend it backwards. It's the only finger joint that doesn't overextend, all my other fingers curve backwards nicely and even more so if I apply pressure.

Bending the thumb forwards (opposite as in your photo) is a different story. The joint can bend past the 90โฐ, easily 80โฐ or more if I press it against something.

[โ€“] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah mine doesn't go forward from vertical

[โ€“] dogma11@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

My thumbs used to bend back 90ยฐ or more but after years of abusing them and a few injuries, severed tendon here and there, they only bend forwards and straight up now :/

[โ€“] Mike_Hunt@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago
[โ€“] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

Nah both are the same and it doesn't hurt.

Applying pressure doesn't move it at all it just locks up

[โ€“] baduhai@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago

mine bends about 75ยฐ backwards and 90ยฐ forwards.

[โ€“] rayf@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

Same, both thumbs bend backward to 90ยฐ. Used to have fun back in school, saying I'd always got my set square with me for geometry.

[โ€“] Sam_Bass@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

Bout halfway that way. Age stiffens things

[โ€“] monovergent@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

Mine can bend back about 75ยฐ back unassisted, nearly 90ยฐ assisted. Forward, 90ยฐ at the base joint and another 90ยฐ at the distal joint.
