Recently, I just can't just watch youtube videos on 1.0x speed, I go as fast as 1.5, sometime 1.75 or 2.0. I skim all the articles i read. And I just skim anything said by npcs in video games. I used to be able to take it slow and enjoy the details in games, now I kinda go like ugh, boring... next thing please

I played BOTW and TOTK then I can't finish TOTK anymore. Like its not bad, just feels tedious after playing for a while (barely been 2 months)

Is this a thing? Getting older = less patience? (I'm not even old lol, still only a young adult)

I think it largely has to do with every system we interact with (from birth at this point) being optimized, professionally by people with doctorates mind you, to drip dopamine for you. I believe (without any evidence lol) that this is creating an ADHD society.

I back this.

Short form content practically everywhere has fueled this need for quick fixes and it gets so much harder to do anything that actually needs attention.

I was like this, but I realized that it was because I was stressed, that I always thought that I didn't deserve to watch that video or play that game or do that hobby, so I rushed through them so I wounds feel as guilty. I started splitting my day into chunks and I told myself that I won't work after 6. So now, after 6, I don't feel guilty for relaxing anymore. I still watch videos at 1.25, but not 2x anymore :P

You probably don't have the same issues as me, but I thought I'd share.

Getting older.... i dont have 4000 hours to spend playing a single video game... ive got 1 hour a night at MOST to spend playing video games or mindlessly watching video, so yeah, i feel compelled to skip anything tedious. Welcome to adulthood someone i assume is no older than 25.

I'm a few years in :(. Rambling YouTube videos particularly annoy me, to the point where I sometimes just search/skim the transcript.

I'd suggest co-op games, if you can find folks to play with. Or watching TV 'together.' It kinda injects energy back into things.

That requires friends, which I do not have 🫠

I can relate.

Some games will have communities you can get into, though.

If things feel tedious do something else. I also go through phases where I start up something I know i normally enjoy like video games and it feels like a chore. I'll focus on some other hobby like biking or hiking for a few weeks and when I get the itch I go back and enjoy the game again.

I also have found if it's kind of happening with everything that reducing alcohol or caffeine or smart phones usage, or getting more exercise can help

caffeine

Bruh, without caffine, I feel so dead.

[–] Feyd@programming.dev 3 points 1 week ago

Yeah I feel ya. Reducing sucks, but if you have more than a couple cups of coffee worth every day you'll probably feel better in the long run if you cut down

I'm 47 and have never played video games but I like and watch long format videos especially documentaries. I do occasionally have issues with Chanel's like gamers nexus but they add time stamps so I can only watch the parts I care about. I also appreciated Toms Hardware and Anand tech so I could move to the areas I want to read about.

I've definitely noticed my attention span is rather slim in recent years.

I quite frequently start a youtube video, then move to Picture-in-Picture so I can scroll lemmy or browse forums at the same time. It's like one thing at a time isn't enough anymore.

I've gotten so bad I fantasize about getting an adhd diagnosis.

I try to mix doomscrolling with sitting outside looking at the trees for hours.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is that why my neighbor sits infront of the door on the stairs only to stare at his phone?

[–] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 1 points 2 days ago

Haha, maybe!

I mean youtube videos ahve that issue with getting to the point. I don't even pay attention till ten minutes in. Articles can be the same so have to skim to find the main point or significant details. There are plenty of games I play and never get back to. All depends on how fun im finding it. Even the best I tend to take a break from and come back till I complete it. Yeah some of it is our modern multi task bs existence but a lot of it is the modern bs ways videos and articles are made.

I can lock in into almost anything that interests me in any way and most things that just have to be done. The problem is always starting and not being pulled out of it by some distraction.

I think i'm pretty conflict about this tbh. In one hand i'm starting to slow down or at least getting better at allocating my free time as its slowly shrinking. Nowadays i just want to chill with my cats or work on stuff while having video running in the background. I don't mind taking time to do stuff or be patient about waiting.

In the other hand i also dropped two game as i have no patient to finish it, but still, i think it's fair to drop it once the game run it course. Games require your full attention and as you grow older, you will have less time to allocate to videogame, and if the game need a long time to finish, then no harm dropping it. I couldn't finish Grounded because the final fight requires me to build a whole new base in a new place, which is incredibly tedious. I couldn't finish They Are Billions despite my initial praise, each mission require you to spend around 70 to 90 minutes, and they will not tell you what to prepare for, failing a mission mean you need to pour another 70 to 90 minutes in. That's a lot of time required just to finish the game if all added up.

But despite that, I still kinda agree though, that everyone basically have no patience anymore, video have to be short, stuff need to be made quick, food need to arrive quick, info need to come quick and be processed quick, car need to be driven fast. slowing down really helps me with any fomo i might have and decrease my anxiety, i just don't care about the latest and newest stuff because shit will be forgotten after a month or so anyway and people would move on to the latest and newest stuff.

Yes with just about everything. Number one emotion these days is irritation.

I feel ya, and only recently discovered Esoteric Ebb's demo, which is refreshingly promising. 🤩
