Oh Scott, we've all been there

my locale has one of these. all ten restaurants in town have signed up, and if you take three receipts with the restaurants having eaten at them (it can just be coffee) to city hall they give you... something? i dunno, I have only done twice in a month.

[–] MTK@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You're an adult, no one is stopping you. As Shia says "JUST DO IT! 🫱🫲"

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Except the UK having a pretty crap bakery culture. It might be better in cities, but for most of us I suspect it's just "Here's a selection of stodgy pre-packed cakes we defrosted this morning. That will be £5 please. Oh you want to sit down? Then it's £6."

[–] HurricaneLiz@hilariouschaos.com 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

That's sad to hear since there's so many cool places with bakery culture near you. That's like when I found out Houston makes New Orleans boiled crayfish wrong even tho they're only 6 hrs apart 😂

[–] ALiteralCabbage@feddit.uk 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

We have a decent culture of baking - but in terms of commercial outlets you generally need to be living somewhere fancier than average to get more than one half decent bakery.

If the new Orleans thing shocked you, Wait until you find out how upset Brits get about whether you apply clotted cream first or jam in a cream tea.

And the counties that get the most het up about it are at immediately next to each other.

They soon forget their differences when I pull out the can of squirty cream.

Lol I'm not looking squirty cream up 😂😂😂

[–] KIKILOVE@piefed.social 5 points 6 days ago

My grandma used to that.

She got diabetes

[–] AlexLost@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

How many pastries can one person eat? Also, you dont get anything but bad health out of the deal?!

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 5 points 6 days ago

And delirious joy.

I don't want to live too long, so both is good.

Short life well lived and all that!

[–] Bronstein_Tardigrade@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I did this in Ho Chi Minh City subconsciously. Struggled to walk by a bakery without stopping for a cheesy baguette, tart, or donut. Never heard anyone waxing poetic about the smells wafting from a bar.

I'm glad for you that you were able to try all those foods 💜

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Porque no los dos?

[–] territorial@slrpnk.net 1 points 6 days ago

Every year in my area there is a croissant festival where participating bakeries sell their finest croissant at 1.50$, and this is exactly what we do. A croissant crawl.

[–] steeznson@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

first one, then the other

[–] maxxadrenaline@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

only if the bakeries have alcohol

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Technically, they make alcohol there if they're making yeasted bread..

[–] Meron35@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

We welcome all forms of yeasty goodness

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 31 points 1 week ago (3 children)

This is obviously referred to as a "Cake Walk".

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 5 points 1 week ago

I see what you did there

[–] cryptTurtle@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

there it is. Best I came up with crakeries but that just makes it sound grumpy

[–] makyo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I always come to the comments to find a better pun already made

Used to do this as a student, in Sheffield there's a long line of Greggs through the city all about 1 steak-bake-walk apart

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 15 points 1 week ago

I wonder if this is why the Romans laid down their roads

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 11 points 1 week ago

This comment should be the British national anthem

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Manchester has got you if you fancy another one. We have so many Greggs and it ain’t even nice nor cheap anymore.

Edit: I can’t honestly fathom that we have 16 of these shitty places within the city centre. Thats crazy. Then there’s 4-5 McD in that same area too and god knows how many Costa Coffee shops.

Carb crawl?

Nothing wrong with a grub crawl

[–] Evil_Incarnate@sopuli.xyz 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Same basic ingredients, grain, water, yeast.

But how will that help me drown my problems in alcohol?

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 days ago

Bun-ny hop?

Of course, a cake walk. Muffin or Mochi March. Donut Derby. Croissant, Crueller, and Cookie Crawl. Bismarck Bun Fight. In winter, a Loaf Luge.

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Interesting... So get this...

Donut crawl.

Muffin Shufflin’

[–] cryptTurtle@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

imo this is the best way to plan a visit to a city anyway. Just pick something you like and visit all the versions of it in that city. Could be anything. Trashy bars, theaters, parks, etc. Works great
