They should open source their entire OS for them to become a real Android alternative.

Could you tell me that would change things? As most of it is already open source, how could it suddenly make it even better alternative with everything open sourced?

Seems like just apps and UI are not, which judging by the post is something they are working on.

The hardware and android pieces I would guess are less in their control unless they were to create their own compatibility layers?
