My take is that Satisfactory isn't a crafting game it's a resource management game.
Edit: They specifically state that this game is about automation.
I guess that's my frustration with other games, is now that I've had automation and how clean it is, I keep wanting that in other games. I'm finding it tedious to craft in other games
tons of other games have automation where you need to recruit towns people and assign them tasks
schedule 1, medieval dynasty and sale blazers immediately come to mind.
Well, you're comparing Satisfactory to No Man's Sky, the latter of which didn't even have base building in its original release (for real, it was added on update 1.1), that was a literal afterthought
I have very strong opinions on NMS, after playing 500h and not really enjoying my time there. The TLDR is "it's a collection of bad systems with little to no interaction between them". How the fuck did I even play so much if it's not that good of a game? No fucking clue.
I would have raised an eyebrow but I get it. I'm only 50 hrs in, but that's what made me feel this way to begin with. I had no idea it was added later but I can completely see that. I just don't know how they didn't add together the ideas that "hey they may need to make a lot of these, let's connect this part to that part so they can walk away and craft other things".
My uneducated guess is that they never review whether a design decision has been properly or badly implemented. The only things they managed to make work is space flight and the seamless transition from space to planet - but so did Evochron Legends many years prior.
And that's the only reason I like nms is the perfect transition, and can't find any other games that do it well
Oxygen Not Included has a lot of room for automation of systems, once built.
The time your workers (Duplicants/Dupes) spend gathering materials for a task and then moving to the task is one of your most valuable and expensive resources, so adding automation to tasks is crucial.
Really tried to get into ONI since it seems like exactly the type of game I would love but I just couldn't sink my teeth into it. The UI felt like rimworld but with a much more watered down set of possibilities. Any tips for trying to get into it? I feel like I might be expecting the wrong things from this game
ONI also took me a long time to get into. Personally I find it difficult, especially late game heat mangement so I usually just end up picking an icy planet.

ONI is a game of unforeseen consequences.
It’s a disaster management game pretending to be a colony sim.
You set up systems kinda as placeholder, but they seem to be working fine so you move on to other things.
Then something happens, maybe a pipe backs up. Maybe you mine out the wrong tile. Maybe you set the wrong permissions on a exo-suit checkpoint.
Eventually (regularly) one small problem cascades into several massive ones.
A few examples:
Example 1: I was electrolysing oxygen and hydrogen from water. I was using the hydrogen for power, which was fine. But I stopped mining out the organic biome, which starved my other means of producing bulk oxygen. My base is quickly becoming oxygen starved, my Dupes are losing sleep due to low oxygen, so their performance and productivity is down while their stress is up. So I re-route half my exo-suit oxygen supply to go into my base core. This buys me time.
However, now my suits are starved of oxygen, but I need them to keep expanding and get more bulk oxygen material. So it’s a catch-22; slowly suffocate in my base core, or gamble and try find something to get my oxygen generation back working. (Fixed by setting 80% of my suits to not receive any oxygen, so at least a few would be usable. Went and found some Algae to get my bulk O2 back on line. While that was ongoing: Built a new electrolyser setup. Pumped oxygen from the edges of my base directly to the bedrooms)
Example 2: in a hot biome, looking at cracking into a sealed Volcano for free steam power. I fuck up, 300 degree steam everywhere, machines break and shut down the entire area. Scramble to rebuild machines out of a more heat-tolerant material and get them back online. Crude oil touches off a hot tile, instant 500 degree Sour Gas cloud which further cooks the area. Brick it back up, decide to retry that one later, once things settle down some.
Part of the fun is also when you struggle to get a system working, then you can figure out automations for the system to free up Dupe time. It took a while, but now I have a blueprint for a 8-capacity ranch for little critters that eat rocks and poop coal. I’ve automated feeding and collecting the coal, and sending it to my coal generators. It also collects eggs and holds a restocking cache of them for when one dies of old age. The rest get digivolved into meat for the barbecue. All my dupes need to do is pet the live critters, very occasionally bring a fresh one from the cache to a pen and cook the meat that is conveniently placed in the fridge beside the grill.
It hasn't ruined other games for me, but it's definitely the best 1st person automation game I've played. But I still love factorio, Dyson Sphere Program and Shapez. They're all great in their own ways.
I can't find other ones as good yet though.
Satisfactory is great because you have Z axis (DSP has some but it's much less developed) and a ton of freedom to build incredible spaghetti nonsense everywhere. I love being able to move freely through the world in satisfactory and I've never found anything in its class that comes close. Subnautica is probably the closest to scratching the itch but it's first and foremost a survival game with base building, not an automation game at all. Now that I think about it I like Grounded for the same reason but the base building in that game is much more tedious and grindy.

I been wanting to try this game. Is it worth it? What does it compare to?
It's most similar to factorio imo, but has a bit more depth to it (though both have depth in different areas). There's a bit more emphasis on the 3rd dimension in the gameplay than factorio, and less than satisfactory. I think it threads the needle between the 2: more orderly than satisfactory, more chaotic than factorio.
One you convert a star system into a Dyson sphere, you gotta get FTL, there's MOAR STARS to sphere up.
My favorite thing to do was to make Faberge egg style spheres around my systems.
Also: mecha.
Of note: I played this some time ago, and there wasn't an adversary system in it yet. I see they have added one so, cool, but I don't have any opinions to add about it's quality and effects on gameplay. It was fun enough for me on "passive robot star farmer" mode, and remains one of the few games where I took a screenshot of how cool I thought something looked.
Astroneer is closer to satisfactory and has a lot of the same features as NMS.
The automation for astroneer is a tad more tedious than satisfactory , but it’s still useful and you can fully automate giant production chains

No, I enjoy Satisfactory immensely, but I feel it's in a category all it's own so I don't try to compare anything else to it and just enjoy that game for what it is.
They say that Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game, for me satisfactory I love but I have been playing Factorio for longer and it kinda ruined satisfactory and lots of other games for me. Whenever I try a new game that has any kinda crafting it's just I always compare it to Factorio and I simply just like. Ruins it.
So yeah I can relate to this a lot.
I'm glad someone else feels the same. That's a good line, I remember Satisfactory devs used it, maybe that's what I'm doing with NMS, but I guess for me I'd rather be up there exploring, instead I'm walking 600m to carry some copper back for the umpteenth time
Tbh I couldn't play NMS for the amount of walking and just looking for things everywhere constently over and over again for stuff.
Exploration is fun and enjoyable but not when I have to spend hours trying to find one fucking thing to make something. But that's just a me thing.
I don't really see No Man's Sky in the same genre as Satisfactory. I enjoy both games a lot, but No Man's Sky scratches that exploration and discovery itch, while Satisfactory is an automation game akin to Factorio or Dyson Sphere Program. I like Satisfactory a lot and I've enjoyed my playthroughs of it, but ultimately I think Dyson Sphere Program is a better factory and automation game. It lacks the same base building aspects, tho.
The base building just got tedious, and for how much I wanted to like it, I just couldn't with how much manual crafting there is. And hey maybe it's just not for me, but I think if I could just automate some of the crafting it would be much more enjoyable to me.
I can't stand NMSs inventory system and crafting. it's just horrible. I dislike everything about it from the icons, to the inventory ui to well..everything really. it's just draining even thinking about it.
Playing Java Minecraft modpacks do have a similar feel, and there is always another modpack to try out. Prism launcher tends to be the most popular launcher iirc, its been a bit since I have checked that.
I've done this, and it was fun, eventually my server did come to a crawl though because it just wasn't optimized for it. While it worked though it was a ton of fun!
No Man's Sky is just kind of a shitty game for anything but flying around wasting time. Everything else is kind of just slapped together a bit haphazardly.
