There's a listing on eBay for a T580. Everythings seems fine just that the seller states that the external battery is not included but the internal battery is still intact. Even if I buy a battery separately, is this a good idea?

A new generic battery will work better than an old, worn out genuine one. Just keep in mind that most of the 72WH generic batteries are actually around 60WH.

Probably. I've also got a T580 and like it for work. If it is a model with nVidia graphics don't expect to use it for light gaming. The thermals in this thing are awful. CPU and GPU share a heatpipe so when one heats up the other does as well. And the GPU has a ridiculously low limit of 70° C. After hitting that it throttles so aggressively that you won't even be able to run Quake 3.

I actually think it’s a better deal if it’s missing the battery and priced accordingly. I’d much rather buy a fresh replacement battery myself than rely on the iffy battery that comes with a used laptop.
