It's because to them the only thing that mattered was his in-group status. He was a "great Christian", not because he followed Jesus, but simply because he identified as such and did it loudly.
They don't see what he said. Most of the probably haven't actually listened to him or even thought about him before this.

Kirk wasn't even pronounced dead before Jones started building a narrative around it. And for myself, I'm not celebrating his brutal murder. I'm mostly just very satisfied that first, he won't be spreading lies and misinformation anymore.
Second, that it's apparently right on right violence. The left isn't responsible and it's the right's violent rhetoric that is giving them all of this grief.
Third, that an evil person got his comeuppance in a manner consistent with his own rhetoric, and so all of the right's hypocrisy is exposed.
Fourth, that the shooter's engraving on his ammunition show pretty clearly that he's been failed by the education system and has succumbed to the sort of memeing brain rot that has become our modern plague, so I get to talk about that.
